Lauren Edwards MP statement says “[The TIA bill] was rightly described as the safest and most robust assisted dying law anywhere in the world” No. It was only described this way by the people trying to push it through. Here is how others described the Bill: 1. The Royal College of Physicians said the Bill is unsafe 2. The Royal College of Psychiatrists said the Bill is unworkable, and unsafe 3. The British Geriatrics Society said the Bill’s safeguards are not adequate 4. Domestic abuse charities said the Bill is unsafe 5. Organisations representing disabled people said the Bill is unsafe 6. Royal College of GPs says the Bill lacks adequate safeguards 7. Lord Stevens, ex NHS CEO, said legislating for assisted dying in the current climate of hospice cuts is “utterly ridiculous” 8. MIND says the safeguards are not adequate 9. The CLADD group at KCL (DOI) have said the Bill is “not fit for purpose” 10. The British Association of Social Workers say the Bill’s is not safe enough Spot the pattern?

Our training session from @WRNAfghanistan took place today, which is Mother’s Day in Afghanistan. The session was led by the fabulous, hilarious and learned @GussieGrips (only the very best for our Afghan community). Elaine used clear language and accessible models to teach us about menstruation. She debunked the myths Afghan women had been taught, such as ‘pain relief causes health problems’ and, rather incredibly, that ‘marrying a man makes your period pain disappear’. And she even taught us how to make our own reusable pads! We’ve sent 15 Afghan women back into their communities, armed with the knowledge to explain period science, hygiene, pain management and practicalities to their fellow women. We hope that the impact of the session will be less pain, less stigma and the practical knowledge to manage menstruation. Same old, same old, from @parkrunUK founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt interviewed on the occasion of the millionth parkrun: “My hope and wish is that as we navigate this, we don’t do ourselves any damage, that we protect what is really, really important to us, which is inclusivity, that we don’t alienate any part of the community.” ‘Don’t alienate any part of the community’… interesting choice of words given that parkrun has intentionally devised gender categories that allow males to self-identify into the female category and thereby erased the female category. That’s alienation of women right there, Paul. And is now a good time to mention that the Aberystwyth women’s parkrun record is still held by a man who tried to murder a UK Athletics official and is now doing time in a women’s prison?

Stateside, a gas station. I drank a frozen blue beverage too quickly, and was struck down by a punishment this entire nation knows, and accepts, and has named. The drink is called a slush. Ice, sweetness, and a blue that does not occur in nature. The day was hot. I was thirsty. I drank like a soldier at a river. The pain arrived in my skull like a war horn. Behind the eyes. Above everything. Total. I gripped the roof of my car. I may have made a sound. "Brain freeze," said the cashier through the door, with no urgency whatsoever. It has a NAME. The affliction is so common it has a household name, like a cousin. "Tongue on the roof of your mouth," called a man at the pumps. He did not look over. He prescribed the remedy mid-pump, casually, the way one mentions weather. I pressed my tongue to the roof of my mouth. The war horn faded. The healer nodded at his pump, finished, and was gone in a Chevrolet. In my land, punishment follows crime by way of courts and seasons. Here, the sentence is instant. Drink with greed, and the ice strikes the mind directly. No trial. No appeal. Perfectly fair. And here is what moves me. EVERYONE has felt it. The cashier. The healer. Children. Elders. An entire nation united by the same small lightning, all taught the same cure, all passing it on to strangers at gas stations, free of charge. You cannot fully distrust a country once you know it shares one pain. The freeze does not punish thirst. It punishes haste. I finished the slush slowly, like a scholar. Blue tongue. Clear mind. Then at the door I forgot everything, drank deeply, and was struck down again. "Tongue, hon," said the cashier, without looking up. Discipline is a journey.
