Wow. What a weekend, such a joy to watch the documentary & look back on Assemble.

The folks at @freeCodeCamp made a documentary on Cal Hacks 12.0! It’s got dozens of project demos and also interviews with me and my friends: youtu.be/3PD-vQbpwA8 It’s awesome to be able to see more of the things people built! I’m super proud of the whole event.

Cal Hacks 12.0 was insane! I'm super proud of the whole team for pulling it off :D We had 3.3k hackers and 700 projects were shipped - that's double last year's Cal Hacks! Plus we did it all at the Palace of Fine Arts w/ great food, a silent disco, and beautiful designs.

Truly inspired to see thousands of builders creating the future at @CalHacks 12.0. We never imagined it would be getting bigger and better each year, over a decade after 1.0. Really enjoyed our chat @zoink!

I met my closest friends in high school on @hackclub Slack. Nearly a decade later, I know them irl in SF, building incredible careers. That Slack is an archive of thousands of brilliant young ppl’s early days. @SlackHQ: stop rent-seeking & support the coolest thing on the web!

Slack is threatening to shut off a big nonprofit teen coding community @hackclub (which is amazing and which I’ve helped for years) with just 3 days to migrate off. This would strand thousands of of the world’s smartest future coders. They are asking for $50k (a surprise 60x nonprofit price increase) but won’t even give assurances of more time or future service if that’s paid. Anyone who can help? Feels like a mistaken decision on their part by someone who isn’t seeing the whole picture.

We’ve done it! Check us out: github.com/hackclub/hcb. Taking a seven year old codebase and getting it ready to be public was a massive project.

Our second confirmed speaker for #SFRuby on February 11 is @sam_poder with "How we built a bank with Ruby on Rails". Sam will talk about building a bank for fiscally sponsored nonprofits: hcb.hackclub.com/hq sharing lessons learnt, things that ended up in the technical debt category, and some nifty tricks (eg. doing broadcasts_refreshes_to). 100 people already signed up and it is going to be pretty epic ✨. It makes sense: sometimes we can meet as a smaller and quieter group, but not when we are hosted by @github HQ, right? 😁

The in-house version of Expensify we built for @HackClubHCB has almost crossed a million dollars in reimbursements paid out! Pretty cool.
