We hosted students from @AMNH's Master of Arts in Teaching Science program for their annual visit to the MHB. Behind our bridge office lies an ancient rock outcrop, estimated to be over 400 million years old. Talk about hands-on teaching!

Preliminary glass data from the #2023svartsengi eruption! The ongoing eruption north of Hagafell, although more evolved, has a similar composition to the late erupted lavas from Fagradalsfjall. Glass MgO and K2O/TiO2 are of 6.0 wt% and 0.24, respectively.

New paper alert! We use microCT to look at 3D chemical zoning in sanidine. Couple findings: 1) we can correlate this CT data to Ba concentration 2) sanidine zoning can be very complex such that 2D images will miss it. @geowhateverist pubs.geoscienceworld.org/msa…

#Etna being her beautiful self at daybreak on 15 December 2022. Slow, quiet lava emission is continuing from a vent below the Southeast Crater, high on the east flank of the volcano. Seen from home in Tremestieri Etneo, 20 km south of the summit.

Geochemical results from first 48 hours of Mauna Loa eruption:
> glassy near vent
> small crystals of plagioclase and olivine at flow front as lava cools
> 6-6.8% MgO
> eruption temp 1156 C (2113 F)
> similar to past lava compositions
> no leftover lava from 1984 is apparent
