The Gatekeepers is a 2012 documentary that features 6 former heads of Shin Bet, Israel's infamous covert security agency, which has been a major enforcer of the occupation and Zionism for decades (including torture, subversion, assassinations, mass incarceration and the infiltration and the destruction of Palestinian society in general, counterespionage - a Stasi/KGB for all intents and purposes, with notable SS characteristics).
In the film, the decline in human material as the years progress is very clear: each subsequent head of SB is less impressive intellectually, and has less personality.
They all agree on one thing: what Israel was doing, and had been doing, was morally wrong, destructive and fatal.
They all saw a bleak future for Israel.
None of them, and none of their counterparts in Mossad or the IDF, ever went against the system, or called others not to obey it. Once it used to drive me crazy, but I don't even think about that anymore
Avraham Shalom was the Israeli spy chief who captured Nazi Adolf Eichmann. After decades of fighting with Palestinians, he lamented: Israel became "brutal occupation force, similar to the Germans in World War II. Similar, not identical."
