Does Palo Alto Unified (PAUSD) have a problem doing math?
Its recent parcel tax (YES on B) mailer says “Don’t Mess with Success,” but look at the math pictured and performed on the whiteboard —- (a b) squared —- can we call this result success?

In 2020, in a communication about the parcel tax proposed then, the PAUSD Superintendent claimed parcel tax proceeds represented 17% of the PAUSD budget, when it was less than 7%.

4/5 When I was first studying the California Math Framework claims I came across this chart. Following the reforms in SFUSD, the number of African American students taking AP math exams went from 27 to 18 to 12 to 3.

The one thing I spent a lot of time studying is the claim about 2.8 years of math gains from a 4 week summer camp. Below are just some of the details I found about that claim.

Dr. Boaler’s youcubed newsletter,
(mailchi.mp/youcubed/newslett…), says about the Science of Math (SOM) group, (thescienceofmath.com/), “...they have stated that they are opposed to all that we know to be correct,” which includes SOM saying it is a myth that timed tests cause math anxiety.
So it isn’t a myth? Dr. Boaler has repeatedly claimed timed tests cause math anxiety without evidence (youcubed.org/wp-content/uplo…). She had to admit ‘a misplaced citation’ in the NCTM article (youcubed.org/resources/new-e…). The new citation (Ashcroft 2002)) still doesn’t support her claim. So who is spreading the myths?

The YouCubed people seem unhinged. The science of math people have no math expertise? YouCubed just knows that these myths are actually correct? This is from a mass email from YouCubed.

“Having one core sequence… supports equity by creating one path for all students,” wrote Stanford Professor of Math Education Jo Boaler, justifying the removal to parents. Boaler, who’s built a career out of “reforming” math education in California, has been a vocal critic of “tracking” (placing students in classes that align with their skill level) and has provided the academic legitimacy needed to enact some of the most radical changes to education in the state. At the board meeting going over the removal of algebra, Boaler was even thanked by name.

The Oct. ’23 CMF includes a few ‘detracking' papers: Dr. Boaler's discredited “Railside" paper, Boaler and Foster's unpublished "Raising Expectations" paper, and Burris et al, which actually argues for acceleration. Prior claims about SFUSD, etc. are gone.

Brian Conrad found rampant citation misrepresentation in the California Math Framework. Now we see there was also an effort to cherry-pick results to report. 😞
