Incredible performance. An enormous team effort by every single player out there. This was prime Tony Popovic. His tactics, his organisation, his ability to create a team that refused to break under pressure. One of our greatest World Cup victories. Go have a party, Australia

What a magnificent performance by Patrick Beach in goal. He’s been outstanding. Best part? He’s only 22.

Football hits differently. Hits right into our national psyche of taking on the world.
There’s something so visceral in how Australians get behind their soccer teams in a #FIFAWorldCup. Different to any of their sporting teams. Love it @Socceroos

Excellent first half by Australia. Tactically superb by Popovic, who has set this team up to be incredibly hard to beat. Top marks to Jacob Italiano and Alessandro Circati - faultless under pressure. Splendid goal Nestory. We did look to be tiring though. Big 45 coming up.

Simply awesome there by Nestory Irankunda to score our first goal at this year’s World Cup. He is capable of so much on this stage. May it be the first of many magical moments for him in an Australian jersey at a World Cup.

Tentative opening 20 mins but the Socceroos low block is holding firm. Forcing Türkiye wide, denying them space in the key areas and showing we have some possibilities on the counter-attack. But - critically - we don’t look too nervous and are quite content to soak up pressure.

Today is the day. Hopes and dreams of a nation. We’re all behind you. Good luck @Socceroos. No fear.

Oh sh*t, here we go again.

We’re not covering the World Cup this summer. We’re covering The World’s Cup. We were on the beaches in Brazil in 2014. The streets of Moscow in 2018. But in 2022, we did something different. We went thousands of miles from the stadium, deep into Argentina, to show what the tournament actually does to the people who live for it. We found something so special that we’re doing it again. Even bigger. So while the matches themselves unfold in the US, Canada and Mexico, we’ll be showing how they are experienced everywhere else - in Baghdad, Tashkent, Asunción, Praia and far beyond. The World Cup doesn’t only belong to the host nations. It belongs to everyone who lives for it. Stay tuned, something very special is on the way.

The opportunity for the Socceroos this coming fortnight is enormous. There’s something quietly compelling about this team. And for the casual, once-in-four-year fan, just know we’ve got a pair of special talents in Nestory Irankunda and Jordan Bos. This is their stage 🎤

Plenty to work with here for Tony Popovic. Good range of fresh faces and experience. The hard luck story of Martin Boyle adds another chapter - but opportunity knocks for so many. McGree’s dynamism would have been beneficial - he’s a big loss. Volpato’s opportunity to shine?

Congratulations Auckland FC. Worthy champions - they’ve brought so much to the A-League. A terrific effort by Steve Corica as manager in particular. Full marks to owner Bill Foley, who has made a huge investment to ensure this team was competitive from day one. Champions 🏆

I was in the Arsenal away end that day at Old Trafford - it probably marked the bottom. But my memory of it was just how incredible the Arsenal fans were. 15 years since and the close shaves, Wenger In/Out, fan TV shenanigans and much more deserved a special ending. They got it.

Watching us being destroyed 8-2 . Watching rambo , eduardo, diaby get severely injured . Watch wenger destroy his legacy for staying too long. But its been worth it. Wenger did it all so mikel could walk

Congratulations Arsenal. Plenty of Gooners in Australia who’ve been there through the bad times - and now the good. Especially pleased for Mikel Arteta. What a heroic coaching performance to lift this team past the best team of this generation, Pep Guardiola’s Man City. Epic.

Perhaps the worst moment of Graham Arnold’s coaching career came in 2007 against Iraq. In 2026, perhaps the greatest achievement of his entire career comes as coach of Iraq. Iraq are World Cup bound - for only the 2nd time ever. Congratulations Arnie 🇦🇺 Congratulations Iraq 🇮🇶

Mixed emotions for all Matildas fans today Proud because of how they pushed a champion team, disappointed to get *so* very close. Top marks to Joe Montemurro 👏 Kudos to Japan. Superb. Their passing/control style is such a lesson. Imagine our spirit paired with that. One day.
Thank you, Australia 💚💛 This #WAC2026 rewrote history, the biggest and most successful yet. On home soil, you turned up in numbers, in voice, and in support. We felt it every step of the way. 👏 #Matildas #HowWeWaltz #TilitsDone #AFCWomensAsianCup

The value and prestige of representing Australia in any sport is enormous. Tony Popovic is absolutely correct to set a hard baseline on this issue.
