Interesting to see these kids on the news talking about the social media ban, how they broadly support it and even seem quite relieved. Like they’re already tired of the role it plays in their lives and the way it dominates everything. Hmm.

Scene, Downing Street: ‘How can we make ourselves even more unpopular?’ ‘Well, prime minister, we could allow Natural England to proceed with their plan to shoot 90% of the ponies on Dartmoor’ ‘Yes, that might do it.’
Exclusive from @oliver_wright Dartmoor ponies could be subject to mass culling to reduce the impact on biodiversity after a controversial ruling by the government’s environmental quango Natural England has demanded that all livestock grazing on the moor is reduced by about 75 per cent to protect other habitats, plants and species The move looks set to result in the culling of up to nine in ten of the semi-wild ponies as farmers prioritise their own cattle and sheep to remain within Natural England’s limit to minimise the impact on their own livelihoods Natural England argued that the move was necessary to protect the diversity of Dartmoor, which is a designated site of special scientific interest However, the plan goes against a government commissioned review into the future of Dartmoor, published two years ago, which concluded that Natural England “should not take actions likely to result in a reduction in pony numbers”, adding they were “invaluable for conservation grazing” The move has led to claims that the quango is acting as judge, jury and executioner of the ponies — a species which is itself seen as endangered Dartmoor ponies could be put to death under biodiversity plans thetimes.com/article/ba529f3…

I want to cry every time I see Preston Davey’s little face. I really can’t handle the detail of what they did to him. They killed him after having him less than 4 months ffs. I will never ever understand this level of human depravity.

This is blistering and magnificent from Jenny. "The truth is, the only ‘unworkable’ thing about the EHRC’s guidance is the most entitled men in the world refuse to take women’s ‘NO’ for an answer."
"Having encountered many a Manivannan in my lifetime, however, I’m afraid I’m immune to the charm." On the 'nice' lads and lassies of gender-identity activism, and how insidious the chat of 'joy' is when women's rights being obliterated is the goal. scotsman.com/news/opinion/th…

From what I’ve seen in the media so far, teens are being a whole lot more reasonable and sensible about the social media ban than many grown adults are.
15 year old James speaking to #C4News on the social media ban "I would benefit a lot from the social media ban because I find myself aimlessly scrolling a lot" "It can negatively impact me and affect my social life" "Sometimes I get invited out by friend, say I'm busy, then spend my time at home scrolling, wasting the day"

Assume that some of the people kicking off about YouTube aren’t aware that a) there’s a thing called Shorts that work exactly like TikToks and Reels b) YT is full of dodgy stuff & crawling with weirdos and c) teens could still feasibly use it for legit reasons on TVs anyway.

"Protect the Dolls"; "Most marginalised community"; "Vulnerable". Open your eyes.
This @barrydistrict story is an embarrassment to journalism. Readers are told a "woman" masturbated in front of nurses. They are then told the prosecutor said: "The defendant put her hands down her leggings to the groin area. Staff could see that she had her penis in her hand and that her hand was moving up and down." "Her penis." To be fair to the reporter, he is accurately reporting what was said in court. But that means the pronouns change from female to male halfway through the story. And journalism is supposed to help readers understand what happened by reporting material facts clearly and accurately. Not require them to perform mental gymnastics in order to make sense of the story. This kind of reporting is confusing, absurd and frankly beneath the standards journalism should aspire to. And it shows exactly what happens when gender ideology is allowed to dictate public life - including the legal system and the media. Link in comments 👇

The people I don't get the most are the "kids will find a way" crowd 😅 Think about the things western society almost UNIVERSALLY agrees children shouldn't have: alcohol, cigarettes, & restricted physical substances. We put age restrictions on them b/c we understand the devastating physical & developmental consequences. Do teenagers still find workarounds? Absolutely. But the fact that a 15-yr-old can sneak a drink doesn't mean we should abolish the legal drinking age. Even the most rebellious adults who accessed drugs early in life will fiercely protect their own kids from having open access to those same substances. So why is the proposed social media ban facing such fierce backlash? B/c the damage is silent. You can't see an algorithm eroding a child's mind in a lab the way you can see a cigarette damaging their lungs. Let's make the invisible harm visible(which is what I believe the campaigns leading up to this should've done a lot more). Nearly 40% of children ages 8 to 12 are already using social media. Adolescents spending more than 3 hrs daily on these platforms face double the risk of mental health issues like anxiety & depression. When asked about the impact on their body image, 46% of adolescents aged 13-17 said social media actively makes them feel worse. For teenage girls using platforms like Instagram, about 1 in 3 reported feeling worse about their bodies due to the app. As many as 72% of teens say they have been cyberbullied. Cyberbullying is more strongly correlated with suicide attempts than traditional face-to-face bullying. These apps are altering brain structure during a highly vulnerable developmental window, affecting areas like the amygdala that manage emotional learning. If a legal, physical product was doing this much quantifiable damage to an ENTIRE generation, we'd pull it from the shelves immediately. We need to stop pretending screens are safe just b/c there's no smoke.

“Kids will find a way around it” is also true of smoking, vaping and underage drinking. We still regulate those things. The point of age restrictions isn’t to create some kind of impenetrable force field. It’s to set norms, and expectations. #SocialMediaBan

These Reform people getting upset about nanny states and banging on about how they do parenting themselves (and will supply the VPN) are kidding themselves on a whooooole lot if they truly believe they know what their tweens & teens are really doing when they’re on social media.

They’re all: “I know exactly what my kids are doing when they’re online, thanks very much” …but they’re also… “Kids are smarter than you think and will instantly find workarounds, it won’t work anyway!”

People keep saying “kids will just get around a social media ban”. Teenagers got around smoking age restrictions too. That didn’t mean we scrapped them. Laws don’t have to be 100% effective to set healthy norms and make parents’ lives easier. #SocialMediaBan

For anyone wondering, it’s only been a positive thing in Aus. No one even talks about it anymore which can only mean the kids don’t care. The ones desperate for it will find workarounds, but the majority have found better things to do with their spare time.
