I make some version of this in @Desmos every year and it is never fails to amaze me. There's a mathematical satisfaction in rebuilding it every time too! #math #mathchat #APCalc #calculus

Holy hell, it actually happened: California just eliminated minimum parking requirements for new housing projects within a half mile of public transit stops *statewide*! A truly incredible day for housing and climate policy in the world's 5th largest economy!

Accessibility is not just about the end result, but about the experience. If I can get it done, but it’s 10X more frustrating and takes 10X longer for me as a blind user, it’s not truly accessible. Ultimately, #a11y is about equity of opportunity as well as experience.

It's bewildering that there is so little public funding available to develop and maintain infrastructure that is useful to many researchers compared to the funding that is available to individual researchers to do their own research.
New blog post: fredrikj.net/blog/2022/02/lo… I discuss the current state and long-term development plans (features, maintenance, funding) of some free software projects that I help maintain or depend on (mpmath, FLINT, Arb, Calcium, Fungrim, MPFR, GMP).

∞ is not a Real number, but some explanations for why not claim too much. β€œβˆž is not real because ∞-∞ is indeterminate,” but 0 is Real even though 0/0 is indeterminate. β€œβˆž can only be approached as a limit”, but √2 is also only approached as a limit (of rationals).

It’s hard to correctly say why ∞ is not real without either bringing up the definition of a field (axiomatic approach), or the concept of convergence of sequences (constructive approach).

But students probably do need to know that ∞ is not Real before they’re ready for these other concepts. Tricky!
