I honestly don't think of this deal as a failure for Trump. Starting the war was a strategic miscalculation, but it's to his credit that when he realized that, he dug himself out without caring for the appearances. "Wise" leaders such as Nixon and Kissinger didn't do this.

Sloppy map to show what the March Senate primary in Texas would've looked like if it had a nonpartisan Jungle Primary. Due to the Dem-leaning electorate and the more split Republican field, Crockett and Talarico would have each won a couple red counties like Kaufman and Brazos.
Though it would've given us the funniest possible outcome in Texas this year if our normal primaries worked like that
