1/ #Libraries play a critical role in #workforcedevelopment. They provide welcoming community spaces with computers and Internet access, as well as an array of #careerservices for those seeking a new job or looking to learn a new skill.
Today we have published a new report, authored by Stephanie Walsh, @gporumbe, & @AndreaHetling, examining different ways to increase the efficiency of learning information about government programs such as SNAP:

#TANF turns 25 next month. What would've happened if it had the same reach as AFDC? The answer: two million more families with kids would've received vital cash assistance to meet their basic needs (think diapers, menstrual hygiene products, winter coats etc.)
👏 👏 CONGRATULATIONS 👏 👏 to PhD candidate @sholcomb7 who received a @HorowitzFdn social science research grant to support her dissertation research on how county-level administration of cash assistance affects program access and equity. Read more at bit.ly/36itKkb
Still beaming about being one of 25 doctoral candidates to receive a @HorowitzFdn grant this year! I am so grateful for the Foundation and the important work they do, and so inspired by the work of the other recipients.
Today the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy is pleased to introduce its class of 2020 grant recipients. Our Trustees are glad to be able to support this group of twenty-five young scholars pursuing innovative and urgent policy research. 🎉🎉🎉 horowitz-foundation.org/2020
So proud of my colleague @michelemmartin! We hear about these experiences with the hiring process from job seekers across many of our research projects @heldrichcenter and no one is more familiar with the root causes and solutions than Michele.
Director of New Start Career Network @michelemmartin shares what she's hearing from people still struggling to find work even as the latest jobs report found that the economy added 559,000 jobs in May.

Yes--I see this every day. The hiring process does not favor career changers, especially when workers are more readily available, yet we continue to blame workers for not making the change.
Everything @michelemmartin is saying is 100% correct. Companies’ hiring focus tends to be narrow and there’s little support for career changers. Many skills are transferable across industries and positions.
“Imagine seeing a group of nannies and blasting “Learn to code!” at them as life advice. The low-skill label flattens workers to a single attribute, ignoring the capacities they have and devaluing the work they do.”
Important piece from @AnnieLowrey.

One of the most fulfilling parts of what I do is belonging to @SSNScholars! @sholcomb7 made this gorgeous spotlight for @SSN_NJ_Philly - thanks so much for this, Stephanie.
Next up in our member spotlight series is our @SSNScholars chapter co-lead, @JoanieMazelis! Dr. Mazelis has been a member since 2018, and her work focuses on social ties, poverty and inequality, and student loan debt.
Check out our @CCF_Families report: "the growing burden of student loan debt, especially in conjunction with the economic recession caused by the pandemic, is influencing multiple arenas of young adults’ lives" @Rutgers_Camden @CureCamden @SSNScholars@SSN_NJ_Philly#StudentDebt
Long-term unemployment (6 months) is financially, emotionally, and socially devastating with serious long-term impacts for individuals, their families, and communities. We are going to see serious scars from this.
In addition to the high and inequitable levels of employment loss, the @uscensusbureau's Household Pulse Survey shows staggering rates of food and housing insecurity and experiences of anxiety and depression.
When we use social services, we’re not taking a handout. We’re just using services we already paid for with our own taxes.
If we want to talk about handouts, let’s talk about the tax breaks given to billionaires. Those are handouts.
A recent GAO report shows that millions of full-time, low wage workers in the US rely on Medicaid and SNAP to meet basic needs.

Meet Yolanda: She lives in Elizabeth w/ her kids.
During the pandemic she became sick and couldn't work. Government aid has left Yolanda and her family behind.
So she and her neighbors started cooking for each other and pooling their money for medicine.
