A 100 years ago, in 1919, the colonial British govt imposed the Rowlatt Act, which gave great powers of arrest and preventive detention to the police. It was an attempt to curb the nationalist upsurge in India. It made Gandhi launch his first Satyagraha to secure India’s freedom.
