The quote from John Updike captures the vibes so well: “The true New Yorker secretly believes that people living anywhere else have to be, in some sense, kidding.”

As contrarian and provocative as you think this is, people on Twitter have been clamoring on about being “anti-smartphone” and “anti-internet” since 2009. Tech criticism is so derivative now.

I mean I’ve saved hundreds of lives for one thing The smart phone is a net negative on society and so is this website. I enjoy casinos immensely, they’re still bad

This is the kind of piece you'd expect to find as an Op-Ed in the New York Times.
The median of the wealth held by 65-plus Americans is 47x that of the 18–34 cohort. Yet, most old Americans are living modestly or struggling because just 20% of senior households control nearly 90% of senior-held wealth. trib.al/mVvROWj

The ranks of academia are also filled with people who: - Think of themselves as high status despite having mediocre CVs etc. and below-average scholarly output - Cosplay as exploited proletariats despite being from upper middle class backgrounds and earning well above the median salary in their city - Imagine themselves as important experts despite a research output consisting exclusively of ideological frippery that nobody ever reads - Believe they earned their faculty position on merit, when it was really a combo of ideology and a nepotistic phone call from their grad adviser - Think of themselves as overworked even though they put in about 30 hrs a week during the semester with long summer and winter breaks in between

"I hired my 15-year-old as an intern this summer. He used Fable 5 to build a model for SpaceX and he says the stock should triple by 2030" is a thing that was just said with a straight face on CNBC.

SB 79 takes effect July 1, legalizing 6-9 story housing near transit statewide. A major CA developer: 'A lot of that is gonna unfortunately skip Los Angeles because of Measure ULA.' Cities like Glendale, Santa Monica, and Pasadena may see the first wave.

Rent control alleviates pressure on renters in the short term, but it’s not a permanent solution. It’s a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound. It’s unsustainable, and painting it as an end-all-be-all fix to the housing crisis needs to stop.
rent control is unambiguously a net good for renters. some building that was built in 1960 having rents set at reasonable levels is not blocking any new housing but is keeping someone housed

I can nut-pick some anti-YIMBYs who criticize proposed quality of life improvements like new parks because they believe they will induce gentrification. Those of us who do actual YIMBY advocacy believe that parks are good and we should build a lot of housing near them.

Every once in a while I see a tweet so eager to manufacture an astute observation out of nothing through big words. I think this is one of them.
Intellectualism is much more of an upper-middle-class coded trait than an upper-class one.

If you want any hope of being LA mayor as someone not coded as a standard Dem or progressive, you need to run as an actual moderate. You also probably need to have identified as a Dem for most of your public life. You certainly cannot praise Trump. Sorry. It’s a D 50 city.
