Most HVAC contractors in America are trying to keep you in the 1990s. I had $15,000 cash to spend on a cold-climate heat pump. Nearly every contractor I contacted tried to talk me out of it or over-quote me an outrageous amount to deter me away. One guy spent 20 minutes explaining why variable-speed heat pumps are a scam. Another literally said he wouldn’t put one in his own house. Why? My guess: 1) They are ignorant of the latest technology 2) They don’t have the training to install/service the new systems 3) Their pockets get filled from big box old school HVAC manufacturers if they sell them Unfortunately, a new HVAC for most homeowners is very urgent so these contractors use this time crunch to overcharge or upsell inferior systems. Luckily, I bought a couple of $130 window AC units to hold me over for 2 weeks while I reached out to 15 contractors. I received quotes ranging from $10,000 to over $24,000. Only 2 of the quotes included a modern cold-climate heat pump. After price matching and negotiations, I ultimately chose a Daikin Aurora Fit cold-climate inverter heat pump 97% modulating gas furnace (true dual-fuel setup) Total cost after rebates = $13,000 This system usually goes for around $20,000. Here are the key takeaways I wish I had known before I started shopping: 1. Always demand a real Manual J load calculation. Don’t settle for a “rule of thumb” or register count. I had 3 different contractors give me 3 different sizes until one actually ran proper software. 2. True variable-speed inverter technology is worth it especially in a multi-level home. It runs longer at lower speeds, gives much better dehumidification, smoother temperatures, and is noticeably quieter. 3. Dual-fuel (heat pump high-efficiency gas furnace) is often the smartest move in mixed climates (like my home in Louisville). The heat pump handles most of the year efficiently while the furnace only kicks in on the coldest days (if necessary) 4. Shop aggressively and negotiate hard. Buy yourself some time with some temporary/portable units. I got competing quotes and used them to drive the price down significantly. 5. Duct sealing, correct sizing/tonnage, and proper installation matter more than most people realize especially in older homes. 6. Have a detailed checklist to vet each contractor. An extremely helpful guide I had throughout the process was from @energysmartwv So why did I insist on cold climate heat pump? • Way better temperature balance upstairs (even without zoning) • Excellent dehumidification in humid summers • Significantly quieter operation • I’m expecting to save $60/month on electricity • Less reliance on gas and possibly eliminating the need altogether Modern cold-climate heat pumps are no longer experimental. They’re one of the smartest upgrades most homeowners can make right now. Do your homework to make sure you are getting the best system possible for your home. Don’t let old school contractors keep you in the past. Have you installed (or considered) a heat pump in a cold or mixed climate? Were the contractors helpful or did they try to talk you out of it?

Don’t waste money on an expensive $3,000 electronically-cooled mattress. Your parents raised you better than for you to grow up and pay a subscription just to sleep. Not to mention the risk of water leaks. If you’re a hot sleeper, do yourself a favor and spend about $300. First, get a natural latex topper that is GOLS certified so you know it is truly organic. Next, get some rayon bamboo sheets that have OEKO-TEX Standard 100 which guarantees they’re free from harmful levels of toxic substances. This combo is a reliable, low-maintenance way to keep your bed temperature-neutral, assuming your bedroom already has standard AC. My wife and I have slept much better after upgrading to this setup.

I lived in mobile homes my entire childhood. If you had an actual house with bricks and a foundation, you had it made. Bonus points if your parents were still married.

My 2026 Tesla Model Y is exceptional at the zipper merge. As someone who tends to avoid confrontation, it’s amazing because my car does a way better job at passing and finding a spot to merge into at the last second. And I don’t feel any of the guilt.
Everyone in that line was probably big mad when my Tesla full self driving passed them up and cut right in at the front. But to be fair, that is how zipper merge is supposed to work so you have 2 shorter lines merging together, instead of one long line that created more issues.

I’m begging all the parents out there. Teach your kids to ride a bike at a young age WITHOUT training wheels. One of the best ways to exercise simultaneously for the kid & parent. My 3-year-old learned to ride a Woom pedal bike in an afternoon. Now she’s my pacer while I run.

Nick doesn’t know that Tesla banned him from buying a car because they found this post from January.
Put a deposit on a Tesla 6 weeks ago. They said it would be 6 weeks. Haven’t heard anything. Tried responding to the email, it’s a no-reply. I don’t know how to get ahold of anyone.

Everyone should experience this. An electric car driving you around. I honestly feel bad when I see all these drivers pay $4.50 per gallon for gas while also needing to manually drive the car. It’s highway robbery. Literally.

Hot take: it’s a scapegoat. They’re afraid of making a successful electric vehicle that will have them questioning their entire business model - while also disappointing their biggest fans of the last century. So they make ugly EVs and if they don’t sell well, they blame it on the electrification so they can keep the fossil fuel industry happy.
Why are so many legacy car companies unveiling such ugly EV designs in recent months.....

Genuinely feel for the people in their 30’s who don’t have kids. Feel even worse for the ones in their 40’s and above. Can’t imagine going through the last half of life without children or grandchildren.

Also the contractor you choose is just as important as the system. I want to shout out @3dhvac for being the most upfront and willing to give me exactly what I wanted. If you’re in the KY/IN/OH area, check them out because they are the real deal. They’re certified Daikin Comfort Pro contractors, and they are experts at installing these heat pumps. They didn’t even know I posted this so hopefully they’ll get some more happy customers from it.

My brother-in-law is one of the smartest people I know, but he did something not many people would do. He bought a Tesla for his 16-year-old daughter as her 1st car. After a 4-month search, this is everything he learned and how he got an insane deal on this Performance Model Y

Do you know how hard it is to find a HVAC contractor that will install a modern heat pump? “Heat pumps are overrated.” “They don’t work in freezing temps.” “They’re more prone to failure.” Um, no? The latest inverter cold-climate systems use fundamentally different technology with variable-frequency compressors and enhanced vapor injection that maintain full capacity at -5°F and rated operation to -22°F. These are among the most efficient air-source systems available. And keep in mind, I’m willing to pair a heat pump with an efficient gas furnace for a dual-fuel setup if it makes sense. But I have yet to find someone who will even entertain the idea of installing one, especially a MrCool or Gree Flexx, which typically means the contractor can’t hide behind an un-itemized quote. I knew the HVAC industry was riddled with middlemen who make money through commissions and hidden markups, but I wasn’t expecting such fear mongering. It’s eerily similar to the vibe from 8 years ago when I decided to ditch my gas car for an electric vehicle. Back then everyone said I was crazy, but they just didn’t realize how much the technology had improved. Now, electric vehicles are everywhere. I have a feeling it will be the same for modern heat pumps in homes. Am I wrong?

My 15-year-old HVAC is dying! I need some advice. I want a dual-fuel hybrid setup (2-stage heat pump 2-stage gas furnace) with 2 zones for my 3k sq ft home (3 levels) I’m considering high value budget brands (Goodman, Daikin) to keep the cost down. Any tips going this route?

This car changed my life. On this day 10 years ago, I traveled out of state to reserve a Model 3 before it was even unveiled. 2 years later, I was one of the first Model 3 owners to take delivery in Louisville KY. Less than a year after that, I became the first Tesla owner to refer 1,000 customers to buy a Tesla. Incredible journey. One of the greatest cars of all time!
