Excellent analysis of Community Notes and its role in supporting consensus-based fact checking, rather than the "normal" authoritative fact checking approach.

The systems of sheep ... fascinating! vimeo.com/568430412

Random #km insight: Species monocultures have long been recognised as being vulnerable to predation and collapse. But the same is true of systems interactions. If you know that a certain task is always performed a certain way, that's also vulnerable to gaming & exploitation.

It is clear that "bright line" on reimbursements distorts behaviour. Introducing a tapered threshold for the EMSN based on income would not only be more equitable, but make it much harder for doctors to target costs to maximise profit while minimising consumer complaints.

Put another way: Many of the rip-offs in the medical system are due to an imbalance of knowledge (the "lemon car" problem). If doctors couldn't know the price-sensitivity of the patient in advance, that would go some way to addressing that imbalance & encourage honest dealings.
I consider myself an AI skeptic for most claims. But it DOES have a great deal of potential in diagnostic imagery, as already seen with X-rays. Doctors should engage with Google, not fight it, so the tool can enhance health outcomes for their patients. theguardian.com/society/2021…
I missed that @zeynep is now on Substack! Still a really thoughtful writer about complex systems issues: theinsight.org/archive?sort=… Lots of great stuff to read through already. Understandably the pandemic is a major focus right now but she's covered many topics over the years.

I grew up in Warrnambool with very fond memories of the town. Even people who weren't into bike races knew about the Melbourne to Warrnambool classic. A nice piece of classic journalism: theguardian.com/sport/2020/d…

The Loielo #COVID19Vic Supreme Court Judgement is complex but worth your time. Key point: Just because you disagree with a decision doesn't make it illegal. But equally, something can be legal & still be argued - in good faith - as the wrong decision. supremecourt.vic.gov.au/site…

[Correction: Ginnane J.] The media should pay more attention to the judge's recommendation on para 132 though, after noting that the PHW Act only requires Authorised Officers to take action based on "public health grounds, and for the purpose of protecting public health".
1
Ginnane gently suggests that Parliament should reconsider "who should [exercise these] emergency powers [and] whether [they] should be required to take into account matters such as the social and economic consequences" - in short, to take a more holistic approach.
