World On A Wire (1973). Rainer Werner Fassbinder's mind-bending story of simulation, AI and virtual reality. This ran as a 2 part TV drama for West German TV.
Based on Daniel F. Galouye's 1964 novel Simulacron-3, it's about a supercomputer that manages a simulated world of 9000 'people' who do not know they are artificial. But deaths and disappearances in the real and virtual word force company scientist Fred Stiller to enter the programme, only to find out there may be more layers to the simulation than anyone suspected.
It's a great teleplay and the set design, atmosphere and pacing is suitably eerie and beautiful. It's available on DVD and some streaming services if you want to see a pre-Matrix epic tale of hyperreality and hedonism.
