The affected units are linked to the bank's Global Market operations, continuing a migration trend that has accelerated over the past two years. SBI says such relocations are driven by operational requirements and administrative efficiency. The move follows earlier decisions to shift parts of the Global Market Unit (GMU) and Centralised Global Back Office (CGBO) from Kolkata. Banking unions and civil society groups have opposed the transfers, arguing that they weaken Kolkata's historic role as a major financial hub. Notably, Kolkata was home to the Bank of Bengal, the largest of the Presidency Banks whose legacy eventually became SBI.
