Starmer speech: I’m not sure comparing the Greens and Zack Polanski to Reform and Nigel Farage is quite the winning pitch to progressive voters he thinks it is.

Everybody was told in 2010-15 that austerity was painful but necessary to improve living standards. And then no improvements came, ever.

I don't mean to sound hysterical, but it's exceedingly obvious that the social media ban, the PA proscription, and the assisted dying bill are all unified moves by a government with no intention of bettering people's lives, only snuffing out dissent.

"I think welfare needs to go from hand-outs to hand-ups" is something you say when you want to feel really smart when you're like, a 16 year old centrist.

I invite you to ask which is more likely: that beige centrist Sadiq Khan is a crazed hatemonger, or that these people are far right crackpots with horrifying views, and we have spent most of a decade being told the concerns of people like that are terrifyingly urgent.

The British political spectrum here: two Times columnists, theoretically from opposite ends of their narrow clique, who are closely aligned and have long been working toward much the same goals. Now moved on to more openly and unashamedly malignant far right propaganda projects.

Scale of sentences on the 4 young people who took direct action against the arms supplier to Israel is truly shocking. To impose years of imprisonment for protesting to save lives in Gaza is unjust, especially sentencing on terrorist grounds they were never convicted of by a jury

What was it that attracted comically malicious far right crank Weiss to (checks notes) the former head of the British national equality body, who (checks notes again) has been paid for years to tell people the far right are not racist and saying they are, is divisive

reluctantly forced to embrace Starmer’s pathological stubbornness because it’s absolutely vital that he and everyone else see off the ‘I was in the military’ defence psychos within Labour. least he can do after bringing so many of them in in the first place

Vital corrective to the awful mainstream discourse on defence spending from @lazebnic. Mad: 20 articles on BBC about defence spending. 71 sources quoted. Not a single one critical of increased defence spending, even though majority of population don't want increases to defence.
Acc to @Ipsos, 55% of the UK don't want an increase in defence spending. Yet try to find these voices in the media. Nowhere to be seen. My latest for @LRB in response to John Healey's resignation & the forthcoming international @STWuk anti-war conference lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/june/wag…

Healey wanted to increase defence spending by £28bn/year from £61bn to approx £89bn. That's an increase of 40%! It was an ABSURD ask - UK would be the fourth largest military spender in the world after US, China and Russia. Vast amounts of that would be siphoned off by rapacious, price-gouging contractors in the most corrupt industry in the world. And none of it would help - in fact, it would mostly worsen - the biggest threat to global security, which is climate change. The right wing press will try and present Healey's ask as eminently reasonable, but it was a ludicrous cash grab at the same time that were cutting overseas aid, climate change mitigation and welfare spending.

Whether its Palantir or anyone else, I would argue that Mark Rowley's insistence that achieving his primary aim of keeping Londoners safe rides entirely on access to one company's software reflects quite badly on him.
'London will be less safe', says Sir Mark Rowley, after London mayor Sadiq Khan blocked a contract between Palantir and the Metropolitan police ⬇️

These horrible people spent most of the last two decades deliberately rehabilitating as much of the National Front’s politics as possible, while telling audiences that anyone resisting them was a traitor plotting to destroy Britain. *Of course* they are going to stick to that now
