I encountered a group of Havruta elementary students wrapping up their outdoor democracy class near the Legislature protest site. Their history teacher held a DIY protest umbrella guiding the cheerful pupils to MRT.

The umbrella was taped with the message "Reject black box, defend democracy." When asked about their opinions on the bill, one 11-year-old told me, "It’s not fair that they threaten us with the power they hold. My mom was here last Friday, and I’m here today," he added.

Despite the bill passing around 5pm, the demonstrations are expanding as night falls. Shots were taken at 8pm, 7pm and 5pm. The crowd size is still shying away from last Friday night’s.

A set of connected scatterplots that represents growth (x-axis) and freedom (y-axis) in China, from the Mao era (1958–1976) to today. The same plot with the different Chinese leaders since Mao being highlighted is presented five times. Xi’s chart occupies the left half, while Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping (1978–1992), Jiang Zemin (1993–2002) and Hu Jintao (2003–2012) occupy the right half. For Mao, it was a variation of growth (from very high in 1958, and wiggling back and forth) and consistently the lowest freedom on the index. Deng starts in the bottom left quadrant and rises to the top right. Jiang stays at high freedom and a slightly changing GDP growth level. Hu stays in the top right quadrant, but sees a declining freedom index, down to the 0.13 average in 2012. Xi starts in the top right quadrant and lands today in the bottom left (0.05 freedom and about 5% annual GDP growth).

After two years of fighting, Ukrainian farmers are drafted to bolster the military. Agriculture, fishing and forestry employed 15% of the country's workforce in 2021, and Ukraine is a massive grain exporter. @k3blu3 made maps showcasing where the damage has happened:
