For the foreseeable future, I'll no longer be posting new thoughts here, just links to podcast episodes and other mid-quality spam. New ramblings in elephant land: mastodon.social/@spiralgangl…

What's the name for the subjective experience of interacting with a tool, dynamic system, GUI, etc? Are there kinds of ideas that can only be expressed by designing interactions? @stefanlesser and I put our heads together on this — and recorded it. patreon.com/posts/new-physic…

I’m looking for a dev job! Last year I explored mixtures of text and visuals, went crazy with caret controls, visualized math. I’m looking for a role where I can create for the web. If you're hiring or have ideas: please share, comment or dm :) Here's some stuff I've made:

This makes me imagine an alternate timeline where the GUI evolved out of the CLI instead of replacing it entirely. The outliner as desktop metaphor. (Which then makes me imagine a timeline where the GUI evolved out of a drawing canvas. MacPaint as desktop metaphor.)

Always the expert performer, @TodePond conducted an orchestral piece with audience members as instruments. With the help of their impressive new time-travelling software Aroost 13 mins long but well worth watching the whole thing. Ambitious. Hilarious. On brand.

Another podcast that I recommend, but requires some explanation: Future of Coding: futureofcoding.org/episodes/ Imagine a combination of Philosphy Talk, Papers We Love, and Radio Lab. I really enjoyed them reading some of the most influential papers in computer science: - Out of the Tar Pit: I had no idea that this paper might have been published under pseudonyms! futureofcoding.org/episodes/… - No Silver Bullet: by Fred Brooks: I read this decades ago, but now think I need to reread it. The IBM System/360 project was a case study in "Wiring the Winning Organization," so I now know what a prominent role he had in it. I need to reread this paper, given what I've learned about just how monumental and pivotal this $20B R&D (in current dollars) project was. futureofcoding.org/episodes/… - Worse is Better by Richard P Gabriel: I've heard so much about this concept (esp. as it's referenced around JavaScript, etc.). I had no idea that he wrote this out of furstration seeing LISP machines lose to Unix. futureofcoding.org/episodes/… - Interpreting the Rule(s) of Code by Laurence Diver: fascinating analysis comparing code and law, and what happens when they converge. futureofcoding.org/episodes/…

Future of Coding 65 • Interpreting the Rule(s) of Code futureofcoding.org/episodes/… The execution of code, by its very nature, creates the conditions of a “strong legalism” in which you must unquestioningly obey laws produced without your say, invisibly, with no chance for appeal.

This is a wild idea; today’s essay is packed with them. In drawing parallels between law and computing, it gives us a new skepticism about software and the effect it has on the world. It’s also full of challenges and benchmarks and ideas for ways that code can be reimagined.

The conclusion of the essay is flush with inspiration, and the references are stellar. So while it might not look it at first, this is one of the most powerful works of FoC we’ve read.

I was sadly just laid off at shopify I've worked across the stack, building distributed systems, complex frontends, web, mobile, data engineering, compilers. I've worked in countless languages and love diving into to complex systems. Reach out if you know of any opportunities
