Most Europeans are moderate drinkers and the data shows it.
According to EU and WHO data:
✅ 82% of Europeans respect low-risk drinking guidelines
✅ Alcohol consumption has decreased by 9% between 2010 and 2020 but by more than 15% over the last 3 decades
✅ Alcohol attributable mortality rate declined by 21% between 2010 and 2020
1st message: Drinking patterns matter when it comes to health!
2nd message: The EU is moving in the right direction. Progress is possible when responsibility, prevention, and moderation are at the heart of public health strategies.
👉 Alcohol Trends: The Bigger Picture | responsibledrinking.eu#UnitedInModeration#FactsinContext#AlcoholPolicy
Over the last decade, alcohol consumption per capita across the EU has fallen, with harmful patterns like heavy episodic drinking stabilising or declining. These changes are not just mere statistics, they are translating into real health benefits.
Europe is on track to meet its objectives of reducing alcohol-related harm, with overall alcohol mortality down 21% and alcohol-related road traffic injuries down 37% over the past decade.
Sustained progress depends on shared responsibility: effective public policies, strong prevention campaigns, and consumer awareness. Industry has played an important role in promoting moderation. Europe can build on these positive trends and strengthen the link between responsible choices and healthier lives.

DYK what is the definition of HEALTH by the World Health Organisation?
The answer can be found in the constitution of the WHO: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".
Social connections are key to mental and social well-being. In our European cultures, these connections can also be done over a drink or two, enjoyed in moderation in a convivial social setting.

✔️ For most individuals, alcohol in moderation can be part of a balanced lifestyle.
✔️ Evidence shows that light to moderate drinkers (typically up to 30g of ethanol/day) tend to live at least as long as abstainers.
✔️ People in Europe are drinking more responsibly than ever, with alcohol-related harms on the decline.
Of course, moderation is not the right choice for everyone. Some individuals may benefit from not drinking at all and consulting a doctor is the best way to understand personal health impacts.

A welcome step forward for transatlantic trade! 👏
spiritsEUROPE welcomes today’s agreement in principle between the European Parliament, Council and European Commission on the legislative proposals implementing the EU-US Turnberry agreement.
The framework may not be perfect, and there is still work ahead on both sides, but moving quickly now is essential to avoid further escalation and give businesses the predictability they urgently need in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
For Europe’s spirits sector, stability and open trade matter. We hope this agreement can become a foundation for deeper EU-US cooperation in the months ahead.

Responsible drinking is about managing risk, just as individuals do in other areas of their lives.
Clear communication of risk helps people make informed, balanced choices - the foundation of moderation.
Public health policy must empower people to make lifestyle choices based on their own circumstances, resulting in better outcomes for them and for their communities.
#UnitedInModeration#ResponsibleDrinking
Most EU citizens drink in moderation and understand the risks of excessive alcohol consumption. Effective public health guidance should provide clear, contextual information, empower informed choices, and consider individual risk factors.
Through digital tools, campaigns, and educational programmes, we can boost health literacy and support responsible drinking for everyone.

The impact of alcohol misuse and abuse on health is real. Full stop.
🎯 Public health strategies should target harmful drinking patterns, and offer support to populations most at risk, in particular due to socio-economic vulnerability or limited healthcare access.
🤝 Lasting progress comes from collaboration between all stakeholders, including governments, health authorities, educators, communities, and industry. A whole-of-society approach is key to building a balanced, sustainable framework for alcohol and health.

❓ When it comes to alcohol, informed consumers make responsible choices: they know when and how much to drink, they practice moderation, and they consult healthcare professionals when unsure.
❗ A warned consumer is not necessarily an informed consumer; consumers need actionable guidance rather than overly simplistic taglines. Empowering consumers who choose to drink with the right knowledge supports moderation and helps ensure that enjoyment goes hand in hand with responsibility.

According to the #ESPAD survey 2024, underage drinking in the EU-24 Norway continues a long-term downward trend:
📉 Alcohol consumption in the past 30 days has decreased from 67% in 2003 (peak period) to 43% in 2024;
📉 Prevalence of heavy episodic drinking has declined from 50% in 2007 (peak period) down to 31% in 2024.
These positive trends are partially the result of long-term and sustained prevention and education measures which have supported changes in social norms. Uniting with all relevant stakeholders to fight underage drinking appears to be successful, and this whole-of-society approach must continue.

The Trump Administration has prioritized the reduction of deficits and the rebalance of our trade relationships. Appreciated hearing from the @DistilledSpirit and @spiritsEUROPE leadership teams on their efforts to achieve balance for the spirits industries in the U.S. and EU and their continued advocacy for EU implementation of the Turnberry agreement without amendments!

The EU-India FTA will bring significant benefits to both sides - but only once implemented. It would be great to see it in place before the end of the year or in Q1 2027...
Glad to see Minister @PiyushGoyal. We exchanged views on ongoing efforts towards @wto reform and discussed the follow-up to our 🇪🇺🇮🇳 trade agreement – both sides working hard to ensure a swift formal signature for the benefit of all stakeholders. Time matters to both them and us.
