Great paper from Yonah Freemark, disrupting lazy narratives. More conservative Sunbelt cities grew through sprawl; this is the cheapest way to add homes, but w major externalities. More liberal coastal cities grew less overall, but grew more in their denser areas. Lost to chew on

Extreme wealth inequality chokes effective demand and kills the host of dynamic market society. Capitalism needs to be perpetually saved from the capitalists who either don't understand this or have alternative plans for the rest of us.
Pure dystopia. Bloomberg:

Interested what reaction we will see to the failure of municipal yimbyism as stewarded by the left (Seattle, NYC), and whether the yuppie housing politic will either: 1 declare victory without at all addressing the needs of the poor or 2 become (more) carceral/paternalistic

When i say failure i mean particularly the failure to address the fundamental contradiction between no/low income and the real expense of building and maintaining housing, which is insurmountable given the fiscal and political constraints on the level of spending necessary

So #1 is declaring victory after some building and flattened rent growth (both depending mostly on cyclical conditions that have nothing to do with policy) while tens of thousands are still unhoused/able And #2 is turning to involuntary warehousing with no permanent housing.

60% of wealth is inherited.

I once saw some abundance guy on here say that neurosurgeons deserve to live near a hospital more than a janitor and rent control gets in the way of that. I appreciated his honesty.

Just noting that both the Vanderbilt report authors and Steven Pinker are scoring points from advocating for “accessible” academic writing — but what they both apparently want is space for conservative writing that could not pass peer review
Academic writing should be addressed neither to the public nor to other academics. It should be addressed to a single interlocutor with whom you have a petty rivalry and whose work you are trying to discredit

Not that this is the main point but L.A. YIMBYs view Raman's ascendancy as based on a YIMBYish housing politics (and it's only -ish...) but they are making a grave mistake in confusing the particulars of Bass' unpopularity with support for their minority views
District 5 mayor's race result is fascinating. That's the district CM Katy Yaroslavsky just won a second term in. She was being challenged by Henry Mantel, who I think has a similar political/policy platform to that of Nithya Raman. Mantel pulled in 25% of the votes.

Til landlords have ‘ethnographers’ too who consider such important questions as “why don’t we send renters to prison for theft when they can’t pay the rent”

Ethnography meaning here we followed one (1) eviction case and then talked to the landlord.

This is the playbook. Tenants unionized and withheld rent because they had unsafe conditions payments were unaffordable. They built up debt. Then city officials intervened pressured the landlord to cancel the debts. This can happen everywhere. gothamist.com/news/landlord-…

We don't talk enough about the San Francisco affordability miracle. Rents are only up about 10 percent since 2017, while cumulative inflation has been 35 percent since then!
