"Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. But we’ve discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning." He was right then, and he's still right now.

Learned today that Jacob Rees-Mogg is Catholic bc he has an Irish-American grandmother. His father, William, had an Anglican father and Catholic mother.

Fun part of this World Cup is learning about all these specific ethnic enclaves in the US, every game has some cut that’s like “and here’s the famed Curaçaoan community in Wilmington, Delaware” and it’s some random bar with like 450,000 people

Usa does not have a huge custom of singing along in a group like that. One of the things I found fascinating when I visited europe. They will now, though....

Life existed before 2005. I don’t think checking Facebook or Twitter is an inalienable right
So the 17 year old coming home from their evening job can't check Facebook or X to see if their trains home are disrupted... or tweet the operator for help!

Yeah I’m sorry but there’s more to my country than nice “weather, nature, food, sports.” You treated my country as an extended vacation and so your takeaway is appropriately vapid. Grow up.
Maybe this is a hot take but as someone who lived in the US for 4 years before moving home to Norway, I think the US is a great country to visit, not to live in. You get all the benefits of how grand the experiences are in culture, weather, nature, food, sports etc but you don’t have to worry about healthcare, overpaid housing, taxes that fund wars instead of your well-being and a lacking infrastructure. I understand it’s a big country and I only lived in Los Angeles (which is worse than most other American cities) but you only need one small medical issue to realize how messed up the system is. Also Trump.

The psephology nerd in me is annoyed it’s capped at only 5 ranks, but otherwise I’m very excited to vote on Tuesday!
A little over five years ago I joined a group of advocates who were working to move DC’s elections to ranked choice voting. This weekend I voted in my first ever RCV election. Looking at my ballot, I thought of how hard so many worked to get those little grids on that paper....

Always amusing to see how British people treat collective nouns as plurals while Americans treat them as singular. “Aren’t England…” sounds so jarring!

Scots-Irish immigrants had a huge impact on Appalachia. They settled in these hard mountains and brought their culture and music and above all this self-reliance. Of course they love Country Roads. How could they not?

Dooley doesn't have a legislative record that could position himself as far right which moderate voters aren't going to like. I can't believe I have to be represented by Ossoff for another 6 years.

I wonder if those in the Irish republic have as much venom for Irish-Canadians as they do for Irish-Americans
Today in Westport, County Mayo, President Connolly and I spoke about the flourishing Canada-Ireland relationship.    Next year marks 180 years since the largest wave of Irish people came to Canada — the start of a proud community that is nearly 5 million strong today.

Yes, this is why Russia has long been a prosperous society
First thing the Bolsheviks did was to look at the Russian national debt and be like "what if we just dont pay" and it worked

We found a way to make the English return to calling it soccer
Oh Boy: President Donald Trump wants the NFL to change its name so that soccer is the only sport named football. "This is football, there is no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff." 😬😬😬
