Scientist mom. Ecology and data analytics at Denison University. #biodiversity, migration, dog lover, guitarist, toddler chaser. Opinions are my own. she-her
I get to teach a "Dynamic Ecology" undergrad class next semester that blends data analytics and ecology concepts. We will explore concepts and measures for short-term, long-term, and deep-time changes.
(yes I know it is the same name as a famous blog, but that's what stuck!).
Other than reading papers and case studies, are there any good basic textbooks or book chapters I should be aware of? Popular nonfiction books? Documentaries? It's an elective so I have a lot of freedom to decide what we will do, with a mix of Biology and Data Analytics majors!
Does anyone else teach a course like this who'd be willing to chat about it or share a syllabus? I have a good outline for what I think I'd like to try, but this is a totally new prep and I'm both nervous and excited!
Labs will be 3 big projects 3 field trips final poster.
Also, this happened!

I am having very mixed feelings about using twitter these days.
But, has anyone found a good alternative? I haven't figured out mastodon yet. I found my scientific community here to be SO helpful for the past 10 years as I navigated grad school, postdoclife, and tenure track.
How are abundance, evenness and richness interrelated in biodiversity change comparisons across time and space? It's complicated. Our Concepts/Synthesis paper @ESAEcology is now typeset and Open Access.

I am happy to answer questions or chat more! Come join me here!
Who likes coming up with names for classes? 🙋♀️ Not me. I'm teaching a new undergrad elective next term - focus on long-term data and ways of measuring ecological change; seasonal, decades, and deeper-time. Introductory data literacy and analysis skills included. Any great ideas?
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! Names and class details due today -- lots of good things to consider here for a Biology and Data Analytics cross-listed course!
Step 4: APPLY ANYWAY! With the confidence of a cis, het white dude.
I almost didn't apply for the job I have now because I assumed I wouldn't be competitive. Clearly I was wrong!
Step 1: Find job listing of really interesting position with a decent wage in a city you could live in.
Step 2: Get really excited, start planning cover letter and update resume
Step 3: Realize that there's no way you will stand up against the other applicants and cry.

Toddler had a croupy cough this week, lots of long fussy nighttime wake-ups, and had to stay home from daycare for several days. Max crankiness and exhaustion all around.
In other news, I *really* need a nap couch for my office.

1/ This is big. @WHOSTP is calling on all federal research funding agencies to adopt #openaccess policies. If they already have OA policies, they must strengthen them to meet the new guidelines. I'll add some summary points in a thread below.
How is the Biden-Harris Admin working to ensure taxpayer-funded research data & publications advance innovation for ALL Americans?
Today, @WHOSTP is releasing new guidance to make this research immediately available to the public at no cost. Learn more⤵️ whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-upd…
I have been hiding out from #ESA2022 in my hotel room this morning. But I’m excited to come see talks and meet with people this afternoon!
In related news, I think I just hit “submit” on my completed tenure dossier. 😳😬😁
