I love Soho, but not everything about it. Neglected for years, money has taken over. Hoping for better, here are observations, praise and criticism where due.

The Newsagent at Frith Street in Soho, London. The top photo was taken 70 years ago on 14th June 1956. Same corner, but what a difference.

Kate, there is no law against the @sohosocietyw1 making any comments they see fit. They is no capacity in law for the licensing committee to dismiss them, either. That's a silly thing to say. The committee makes decision based on law, policy and ALL public comments.
Good to speak to @HenryRiley1 on @LBC about the Soho Society blanket objections - safe to say I’m equally unimpressed and called for Westminster Councils licensing committee to uphold the law and dismiss them

Interesting use of the word 'privileged' by someone who went to Eton. Suffice to say that this take on #Soho does not do justice to a complex situation where misinformation and, sometimes, disinformation abound.
Rare for me to agree with Sadiq but he’s absolutely right. The Soho Society’s privileged regulatory role embeds the few (who decided to live in Soho without apparently realising it was Soho) at the heart of policymaking at the expense of the many.

Seriously bad news for community in Soho.
Soho's last school may be merged and moved to Fitzrovia, leaked plans have revealed. The decision is far from final, with the proposal yet to be green-lit by governors or go out for consultation. If approved the new school is expected to open next April. mylondon.news/news/zone-1-ne…

Before the recent elections: either they knew May 26 was the deadline but didn't realise they couldn't make it or didn't know about the deadline. Not very impressive either way. But in any case, did officers consider there was a reasonable chance of success? Seems unlikely.
Cllr Tim Barnes @voteTimBarnes lays out the truth about Oxford Street. We worked through the weekend with legal counsel to explore all options. After months of Labour inaction, the advice is that a successful Judicial Review is simply impossible at this late stage.   Westminster voted for change. We will explore every legal avenue. My offer to the Mayor stands. We will not be ignored. More at westm.news/0deba7

Really interesting piece. (Part 2 coming up.) Worth connecting with the authors, @sohosocietyw1 @TheMuseumOfSoho, if you don't know them already? open.substack.com/pub/walkon…

Don't let Tim fool you. His party mismanaged #BerwickSt for 20 years - he could have resolved this when he had the power to do so.
#Labour is failing our communities in Westminster. Berwick Street is the high street of #Soho. But the Labour council is mismanaging almost every aspect of how it runs: ❌Benches outside cafes taken away by order of council officers despite being popular with residents, workers and visitors ❌Bollards taken out at the wrong times of day making it dangerous for traders and encouraging traffic that should be there ❌Poor facilities for market traders ❌Rolling over instead of standing up for residents and local businesses worried about Oxford Street pedestrianisation Labour's record is just failure and let-downs. As a start, we are calling for the benches to be allowed back. Learn more about our plan to Bring Back Benches to Berwick St, here: westminsterconservatives.com… No one wants a return to al fresco, but we should be able to enjoy our streets more where the infrastructure already exists. Listen to Dini from @myplacesoho discuss the issues with me. We have similar issues with Shepherd Market in #Mayfair and around Foley Street in #Fitzrovia - Labour mismanagement making things worse for residents and visitors than they need to be. Vote @conservative in these local elections for the team that will work hardest for each and every community and street in #WestEndWard ✅AMOS, Elizabeth ✅BARNES, Tim ✅FISHER, Paul #LE26

Interested in politics? Ben Sasse sets a gold standard. You may disagree on political details, he'd welcome the argument, but how we need this sort of ability, character and approach (I'd say his faith, too). It's American and long, but well worth the time x.com/i/status/2048558692937…

Extended interview: Former Nebraska senator Ben Sasse has metastatic pancreatic cancer. He spoke with 60 Minutes' Scott Pelley about where America has been and where it could still go.
