I wear eye protection in the shop as a default. I do not take it off if I am doing something like soldering, where it is unlikely to be needed. If I am doing a new process that I am unfamiliar with, I don't wait until I have a shard of something in my eye before donning eye protection. It is the baseline. There are some operations- like using an angle grinder, that evidence shows require enhanced protection- a full face shield. But basic polycarbonate glasses are the N95 of shop work- they offer a lot of protection with minimal inconvenience. There is some PPE, like leather gloves, that can make some shop operations more dangerous, so they need to be used with caution. Good-quality eye protection does not have this issue, so there's no reason to forgo it as a baseline. Likewise, with an N95 in medical settings- as a baseline, it prevents many bad outcomes, with minimal inconvenience.
