When a student finds the right words in Urdu (thanks to AI) to express gratitude. It’s such a privilege to teach!

Love this from @Counsell_C: Writing lesson objectives on the board at the start of a lesson is like telling the punchline of a joke, before telling the joke

1/ The DfE's latest attendance package contains some genuinely useful resources, particularly the new heatmap data tool. Better visibility of attendance patterns can help us act earlier and more effectively. But I'm concerned about the direction of travel.

Jo Facer makes this point beautifully in her book. Students who are impulsive, rude and self-centered in school don’t somehow magically transform into the sorts of valued employees who are considerate, collaborative and helpful. And of course almost everything we accomplish in our professional lives will be accomplished in groups serving the needs of some institution. The valorization of rule-less-ness is a lie and a disservice to students.
Schools often teach following are ok: arrive late, be absent; hide in toilets; wander corridors; be late from break; ignore instructions; be argumentative; lie; be aggressive; bully; claim you’re anxious/special for personal gain. No evidence.

The school system is failing to prepare students for work because it is too focused on exam-based qualifications, says the landmark Milburn review, looking at the problem of young people not in education, employment or training tes.com/magazine/news/genera…

📽️ A powerful moment from our recent school visit with @LewisHamilton, where we sat down with our partners and young people they support for an important conversation about the work being done to build a more inclusive education system. We were delighted to hear from @MilkHoneyBees founder @Ebinehita_ and student Liliana about the impact of the H.E.R. Space Programme, which is creating more inclusive environments in schools and we are proud to support. @msybibi, Project Lead for the Increasing Diversity in ITT project, delivered in partnership with @Being_Luminary, @CharteredColl and @ChilternLT, also shared impactful updates on the progress of our work to transform teacher recruitment practices. Find out more about the Increasing Diversity in ITT project in Yamina’s blog reflecting on the special day: mission44.org/driving-change…

On Eid Muslims will make a trip to the cemetery to pray to and for our loved ones. I did that today for my Baba 🤲❤️ We then also go around the cemetery and pray to and for others. They do not have to be relations. A family came over to my dad.. they didn't know it was my father. Then the father of the family said out loud.... " hello Ibrahim (my father's name) ... I'm sure we will meet someday.....and looking at you now I can see you are loved....you've been beautifully kept...that's all we can ask for when we are no longer here" I sobbed. I haven't cried like that in a while. The man turned to me and said "is this your father?" I nodded. He said "how beautiful you have kept him. You keep him here (pats his heart)" Both beautiful and sad at the same time. ❤️

If you are still using this model: Teach unit 1 Revision lesson Exam on unit 1 Teach unit 2 Revision lesson Exam on unit 2 Etc End of year exam ...then you are setting students up to forget everything.

Literacy across the curriculum is not about every teacher becoming an English teacher. It is about every teacher recognising that pupils cannot think deeply in a subject if they cannot access its language.

Great paper from @PepsMccrea @Josh_CPD & @Barker_J. Key phrase: Embrace Cognitive Similarity “While every student brings unique experiences, strengths, and needs to the classroom, understanding the fundamental similarities in how we all learn provides a powerful foundation for inclusive teaching. This principle recognizes that the core mental processes involved in learning—how we pay attention, process information, and build understanding—are remarkably consistent across individuals. In short, how we learn is more similar than it is different (Willingham, 2012). Focusing on these shared mechanisms doesn't ignore individual differences; rather, it allows us to design core instruction that is effective for the widest possible range of students from the start.” resources.steplab.co/content…

A must-read on lesson planning.
New Blog Post 📝 I have relatives of mine who have recently become teachers and the most common questions they ask is how do I plan a lesson and why does planning take so long? It doesn't have to. This is how I do it. Link Below 👇

When students are anxious/depressed, one method of remediation might be TEACHING THEM TO DO SCHOOL BETTER. Just got this message from a mental health professional.

🔥 ‘If we want to break the cycle, the solution is …. treating implementation fidelity as an achievement, not an afterthought, and creating political and institutional cover for leaders who choose continuity over novelty’. A blog of brilliance.
Why is education so damn fad-prone? My latest looks at our field's worst habit: its endless enthusiasm for shiny new things instead of sticking with what works. thenext30years.substack.com/…
