Damu’s Heritage Dine, a local diner in the Chug Valley of Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, is leading a culinary renaissance by serving Monpa dishes that were once popular in the region. From millet momos to buckwheat thukpa, the recipes served are made with homegrown and forest-sourced ingredients, promoting the conservation of forests.
Traditionally, the Monpa community sustained themselves through local crops (millets, buckwheat, maize, and barley) and forest produce. However, the advent of the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the region and migration to bigger towns and cities for better opportunities, brought a shift in agrarian practices and traditional diets. The group of women running Damu’s Heritage Dine are encouraging local farmers to grow millets, along with other traditional grains.
