If you are a University lecturer and supervisor of Masterโs students, by all means encourage students to learn how to write scientific journal articles but please stop encouraging them to submit such exercises to actual journals because you think it would be a good learning exercise for them. ๐ โ๐ฝ Many/most editors and reviewers provide their time voluntarily as part of their sense of duty to science. It is the job of the paid University supervisor to check the studentsโ work.
What puzzles me is why a senior University academic would allow their name to be on some of the many manuscript submissions I have reviewed. Did they even read it? Every author must sign that they have read and approved of the final manuscript, so whatโs going on?

A trailblasing mathematician from a rural Eastern Cape village just got a huge shout-out from the University of Johannesburg. On May 29, 2026, Prof Loyiso Nongxa received an honorary doctorate during the Faculty of Science graduation. Born in 1953, he became South Africaโs first Black Rhodes Scholar in 1977, earned his PhD in maths from Oxford in 1982, and went on to lead big changes in higher education.
He didnโt just grab the spotlight for himself he turned to the grads and their families, tipping caps in thanks and dropping real talk only a tiny slice of South Africans earn post-school quals, so these achievers are already in rare air. Nongxa built national research powerhouses in maths and stats, served as Wits Vice-Chancellor, and even represented Africa as Vice-President of the International Mathematical Union. His message? Keep pushing, help others, stay curious, and use your skills to fix whatโs broken.
