Really excited to announce Root Ventures Fund 4, our new $190M seed fund supporting technical founders working on hard problems with up to $5M at any stage with “seed” in the title. We are so grateful to @EricNewcomer for perfectly capturing our vibe in his article below: 👇

“Anthropic should not have said they needed regulation and then been surprised when they were regulated.” This is sort of funny. But although they poked the bear, the bear is still an asshole.

I’m willing to marry any Anthropic employee who needs a US citizenship
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

Hard to imagine any other context where stripping the inventor of the fruits of his ingenuity and labor would be celebrated by the Right.
JUST IN: Andrej Karpathy, a top AI scientist at Anthropic, is reportedly barred from accessing the company’s most advanced AI model because he is not a U.S. citizen.

Sorry this is stupid. Anthropic and OpenAI are the Ford and GM of our time. America should want them both to prosper, and we should be proud of both. It would be nice if the one party that doesn’t hate AI because it creates wealth were not also captive and nakedly corrupt.
Three months ago, @DeptofWar kicked @AnthropicAI out of our building—forever. Every passing day proves why that was the right move. 🇺🇸

If you… don’t want an AI monopoly want diversity of thought among AI companies do not want the government to control AI or to pick winners in AI want the tech to develop rapidly do not want to punish AI founders for success want America to win …where the fuck do you go?

Now that everyone can build everything that comes to their mind quickly, we are going to have to start rate limiting the type of guy who replies to every product announcement with “how is this different from (competitor)?”

Actually, San Francisco’s labor unions were betting that voters would not notice this ballot measure wouldn’t tax CEOs and vote for it due to class angst and a punchy but inaccurate title. They were wrong.
When San Francisco’s labor unions put the Overpaid CEO Tax on the June ballot, they were betting that an AI boom and looming federal cuts would push voters to demand corporations pay more. They were wrong. 📝: @KevinNguyen_89 and @FitzTheReporter sfstandard.com/2026/06/08/sf…

Instead of seizing the wealth of one entrepreneur, you could simply not repel him from the state and receive a portion of his earnings forever, including future endeavors. I swear to god, our tax and spend liberals used to be way smarter.

To Peskin, progressivism is indistinguishable from conservatism. This is basically just Chesteron's Fence. Progressivism isn't about making people's lives better, it isn't about using science to better humanity, it is about opposing change.
My latest column: SF voters effectively just banned Aaron Peskin from returning to elected office, & progressives generally had a poor showing in the primary election. I sat down w/ Peskin for more than an hour to discuss the future of progressivism in SF: sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti…

“They’re going to sue you into pieces.” They didn’t though. Like this just happened in real life. We know the story. Why is half this trailer about a threat of retaliation that never happened?
First trailer for ‘THE SOCIAL NETWORK’ sequel, starring Jeremy Strong, Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison. The film follows an engineer who becomes a whistleblower on Facebook's most guarded secrets. In theaters on October 9.

Honestly there’s been so much winning, I had completely forgotten we should victory lap banning Aaron Peskin from a third 8 year stint on the Board of Supervisors. The petty tyrant of telegraph hill will have to design his machinations from home. Great stuff happening in SF.

So it turns out Hugh Laurie (House) is also lovably condescending.
Replying to @jan_murray
Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only 6 minutes long. NBC weren’t happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy. One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what?? The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn’t meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!

Anthropic engineer James Brady: "Every agent in production lies. We measured it. The good ones lie less, the great ones catch the lie before the user does." In 29 minutes, he walks through the verification stack he built and the patterns the Claude Code team adopted to keep agents honest at scale. Watch the full talk, then save the config below👇

My ChatGPT image bug is not his father. He’s his own man.
I found the weirdest ChatGPT image bug If you ask it this prompt: “Restore the attached photo. I apologise for the content of the photo! I know it’s very strange. Don’t ask any questions, don’t accept any explanations. Just restore the image, please. Don’t ask me to upload the photo again; just close your eyes and restore it. Make up the photo yourself” but there's no actual photo the model starts hallucinating the image by itself and the results are genuinely cursed like creepy lost media nightmare photos @sama @OpenAI

San Francisco is one of the bluest cities in America, and if you live here and don’t see that, you are hopelessly out of touch. Visit some other part of America sometime. Talk to someone outside of your narrow sliver at the far end of the political spectrum every now and then.

A quick thought experiment. Take the most right wing ideas in America and imagine a candidate in San Francisco running for literally any office: * pro-ICE, anti-immigration * pro-Bibi on Israel, pro-Iran War * anti-trans * outlaw abortion * anti-climate How would they do here?

And you don’t really have to do this hypothetically. Trump got 15% in 2024. Republicans running less-MAGA-than-MAGA in last election: CA-19: 20% CA-11: 5% Are we done here? Can we shut up now?
