Aged Care Quality Varies Widely Across Australia, Study Finds: Long Waits and Medication Overuse Among Key Concerns
A new study published in the Medical Journal of Australia reveals concerning national disparities in the quality and safety of aged care services — both in residential facilities and home care.
Key findings:
▪️ Major differences in antibiotic use, sedative prescribing, and ED presentations
▪️ 82% of home care recipients waited over 6 months for services
▪️ Low uptake of important services like home medicines reviews (3.2%) and chronic disease management plans (43.2%)
The research highlights urgent areas for quality improvement, calling for better oversight and support for aged care providers.
