Very interesting and thought-provoking thread! I’ve been playing around with ChatGPT as well - great fun. Though for Chinese translation, it can get confusing, probably because of the poor data

No can be the way to yes. I said at least 3 nos ( why) to get a final yes from two new direct clients. I got the fees and conditions I wanted (and deserve) and they got the result they sought after. being firm = knowing what you're worth = professionality #TerpLove

Took a leap of faith in June and 2.5 months later, I got my residence permit as a freelance interpreter and translator 🎙✍️ Now the last dragon to slay is the Finanzamt… Any tax advisors familiar with #terp that my Twitter friends can recommend?

I’m looking for a volunteer #terp based in Asia or Americas to help me organise future APRAC sessions! This is a great opportunity to get involved in running online meetings, meet like-minded colleagues and give back to the interpreting community. DM me to apply 🙋

Just watched the replay of @techforword’s masterclass w/ @rpstranslations on RSI contracts. I think every terp that wants to enter or is already in the RSI market should watch it to protect ourselves and our profession. Thank you, Tony & @Goldsmith_Josh for this initiative!

I’m always intrigued by the phrase ‘best rate’. To me, the higher the better, but to the enquirer, it apparently means the opposite 🧐#xl8

The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories - a collection of Chinese sci-fi written by female/non-binary authors. Essays on translation are also featured! Lauch event tomorrow with authors, translators, editors and a #terp (me 😮) bit.ly/TWSALaunch
Question for terps and translators: do you give discount to large projects? My 1st reaction: no, we’re not selling goods. No wholesale price as we’re not translating the same thing again and again. But prepping for a 4-day conf does take less time than prepping for 4 diff ones

Yesterday at the bank: Banker (not out of nowhere): Isn’t Luxemburg in Germany? Me (can’t 🤦🏻‍♀️ coz 😷): No. Afterthought: should’ve asked him if he also believes that S’pore is in China…

What you won’t hear in my presentation (but is still pretty much the reality): My whole life is on @NotionHQ coz it’s that powerful 🚀

During yesterday’s practice session, five #terps pulled off an incredible feat of relay #1nt - DE>ZH>EN>JA 👏👏👏 The original speech we used comes from Steinmeier. Great speech, great delivery. Give it a try if you work with DE (starts at 38’00”): youtu.be/D0-MhgYhw5o

Keeping the theme of vulgarity from last tweet, I believe in Chinese it’s 关我屁事 (‘not my ass business’), which falls under ‘anal related’ But I feel you, Austria - ‘This is blood pudding to me’ (Des is ma Blunzn.)

I’ve been working on a fun project this Jan with @AndrewMethven on Slow Chinese for ZH learners, which involves me recording myself saying swear words in ZH in a measured, nonchalant voice, all the while keeping a straight face 🤣 (And it’s launching this weekend!)

Amusing to see so many languages picked Chinese, while the closest figure of speech I can find in Chinese is 天书 (the book of heaven) 📖 Very true, we’re all mortals after all
How do other languages say "It's Greek to me"? The German figure of speech is the clear outlier here... Source: buff.ly/3o1UApe
