As a laid off postdoc, I turned to a side hustle—and found a new career

#PhDadvice you won't learn in school:
2 weeks ago, I asked academics on LinkedIn to give their best advice to incoming PhD students.
That post brimmed with gems of advice.
I summarized the advice, added my own, and made this video: youtu.be/2u-uPOKru9Q

My next YouTube video is on the topic 20 things I wish I knew when I was a PhD student. Which of these thumbnails immediately grabs your attention? Top, middle or bottom?
Being laid off from a #postdoc, and then being let go from a company because I wasn't "learning" quickly enough for them, taught me an important lesson👇🏾
Create your own career insurance, because nobody has your back.
It is not pessimistic of you to think this way.
It's wise.

Are Google Career Certificates worth it for PhDs?
Especially if you're trying to get work outside academia?
I made a video with a lot of thoughts.
Short answer: I think they could be

@GEICO I am terribly disappointed. My husband & I have been customer for 13 years. THIRTEEN. My husband had dropped someone off Amazon location, and someone backed into his car and then he reported it. This week you sent us a letter canceling our insurance ...
@GEICO - no worries, we will go elsewhere with our money. But you are incredibly fake, unhelpful, and do not care about your customers one bit. @TheGEICOGecko@GEICO_Service
You claim he was doing a delivery and that our insurance does not cover that. Fair enough. But to go ahead and cancel our insurance with a FRANKLY WEAK EXCUSE is the lowest of the low. Especially after we have been customers for 13 years.
In all those 13 years, that we paid HARD EARNED MONEY, we only ever used the insurance for tows. The ONE TIME, we actually get hit and need your help, you NOT ONLY DO NOT HELP. No you go ahead and cancel our insurance. Shame on you.

"But what if I don't like it outside #academia?"

1 - you could go back. Is it easy? No. Possible? Yes.
2 - you will not go back empty. You have experiences to take back.
When I accepted the fact that becoming a teaching professor was NOT for me, I wasn't sure where to start.
These 5 questions helped and I shared them in last week's video on choosing a career path you genuinely love.

I often create videos for PhDs/PhD students but given that sometimes the confusion actually start earlier than that, I decided to make this video comparing my experience getting TWO degrees: biology, and nursing.

When most of us think about our careers, we often don't think we are in control.
Most of us feel like somebody else has to give us the opportunity AND that they can take it away.
But what if we flipped the script & became the C.E.O of our own careers?
