Stopping production on this unfinished Roblox cinematic was honestly one of the hardest moments of my career. A while ago, I promised the community I’d eventually share what we had been building internally at Roblox. Here it is. This project was a labor of love between an incredibly talented group of Roblox devs, animators, artists, and creators. From the beginning, it was important to us that this cinematic was built by the community, for the community, using assets entirely created on Roblox. Every map, character, and object was ported directly from Roblox and re-rigged in Maya, building on a lot of what we learned during the reboot of the Bloxys. We had to invent new workflows, break things constantly, and figure out processes as we went just to make it possible. We intentionally made it harder on ourselves because we wanted to push the limits of what Roblox could look and feel like at a cinematic level. The music and sound design were also original, though still unfinished. Entire sequences only ever existed as storyboards and concept art created by Roblox devs and artists. Ironically, pieces of this project later ended up scattered across ads and trailers after my time at Roblox. At its core, this was meant to be a love letter to the community. Hope you enjoy it <3

I am fully convinced that 2019 was the last normal year we ever had. Ever since then, it feels like everything’s broken. Everyone is constantly anxious, time moves too fast, and nothing actually feels real anymore. The world as we knew it is just gone

Unclear to me what stops Roblox from being a trillion dollar company in the future. Users are there, monetization is there, the lawsuits will be worked out (as they were for every major social media company before this) and as fidelity improves, the audience will age up. When I worked at Square Enix we built Core Online, a game builder, back in 2011. We didn't have the lightweight tech that Roblox has and runs everywhere, we were limited to good browsers on good PCs. We had that dream a long time ago, but couldn't pull it off. These game building platforms are definitely where Tiktok goes. Prompt based instant experiences, AI algorithms providing suggestions, creators able to quickly enable experiences that people play with them together at scale. Add fidelity realism that's coming from AI rendered textures meshes, animation libraries called on demand and Lua managing repeatability consistency, plus Roblox having the most scaled matchmaking services on the planet, and you have a very strong moat. As prompting enables even young kids to create a game with a few words, you'll have an explosion of creativity. Already Roblox games are innovating in game design way faster than AAA- every AAA single player game since Bioshock is basically the same collection of fetch quests bookended by fight scenes, but the speed by which the tycoon genre has been evolving on Roblox (GaG to Steal a Brainrot to Tsunami) moves as fast as Tiktok trends and mints overnight millionaires. In the 70s through the 90s, if you were a teen or 20-something who wanted to make a game, you were a programmer who distributed your own game. ZZT! Karetaka! Now you can be 15 and making a Roblox game and have access to the entire world instantly.

To support massive, high-fidelity worlds, our engine implements an efficient LOD strategy with a cloud transcoding system that streams meshes and textures, even on lower end mobile devices. We are expanding this framework to AI upsampling of 3D worlds from prompts. In this preview video below, with a single user prompt, our 3D upsampling technology updates the geometry and texture to transform the classic Roblox game Crossroads into a fantasy world with rich organic detail. 3/4

Matthew McConaughey is the only major actor I've seen approach this new AI evolution in Hollywood correctly. He states what I've been saying all along which is that actors will of course have to simply "license" their image/voice in the very near future

If there’s one learning lesson you need to take away in 2026 it’s that the truth doesn’t matter anymore and reality isn’t real. People will invent narratives and facts to suit desired objectives and if enough people agree, that’s the new reality. People who point out that the emperor has no clothes will be crushed. Katherine Maher of Wikimedia said it best herself. “Our reverence for the truth is a hindrance to getting things done.” (Paraphrasing) We’re living in a world where lies don’t matter anymore. There are only words and how effective they are to reaching desired outcomes. People don’t care about the truth. They care about achieving their goals. We’re living in Demon times.

Roblox has broken the record of most concurrent users on a platform, ever, with a peak of 47,296,412 players. This beats the previous record held by Steam, with them having 41,239,880 players on their platform.

Whether or not you personally enjoy Grow a Garden, there's no denying the impact it’s had on Roblox, from pushing infrastructure to setting records in player engagement and changing the game industry perception. We plan to keep elevating the platform and proving that Roblox isn’t just the future of UGC it’s the future of gaming. The way people experience and consume games is evolving fast. Just like traditional media struggled with the shift to streaming, legacy game studios risk missing the moment.

Everyone on the Grow a Garden team has given everything to this project... blood, sweat, tears, and then some. Many of us have spent the past 8 years mastering our craft on Roblox, growing alongside Splitting Point every step of the way. There’s no question this level of success wouldn’t be possible without this team. I truly believe this is a defining moment for UGC and indie gaming. There's a growing gap between what AAA studios are delivering and what players are actually looking for.
