My #DisabledinSTEM story: a 🧵
I’ve always been really scared to label my mental illness as a disability. Not because it’s not incredibly debilitating, but because I never wanted to take away space from someone who needed so much more accessibility than I did to be successful
Honored to be representing the biobankers and research pathologists on such a global scale! Can’t wait to meet everyone at the conference next month. 😊
Congrats to the official Top 5 honorees for ASCP's 2024 #40UnderForty program:
Dr. Viharkumar Patel, MD, FASCP
Dr. Kimberly Fiock, PhD, QBRSCM
Dr. Khaleel Al-Obaidy, MBBS, FASCP, D-ABP
Steven Springer, MS, MLS(ASCP) CM, PACM, MBCM
Brittany J. Bell, MS, MBA, MLS(ASCP) CM, MBCM
I am blown away, ecstatic, overjoyed... FULL of emotion to announce I was selected as one of ASCP’s 40 under forty recipients for 2024! 🤩
TLDR: I love this field so much & being honored by ASCP for my work in brain banking is the validation this early career researcher needed.
Congratulations to all of this year's #40UnderForty honorees! #40UnderForty awards the top innovators whose achievements provide new pathways forward in the lab. Review the gallery to see who made the top 40 and cast your vote on who advances to the top 5: bit.ly/3W3Etdd
Most importantly, it means I am fulfilling my mission to bring visibility to brain donation. Ensuring our donors’ legacies live on is the greatest thing I’ll ever do in my career, and each day we help do that at the INRL through our research and outreach.
All of this is to say that if you enjoy the work I do here, if you’ve learned anything from my account or feel like I’ve done something to help change the field, I’d love your vote to get into the top 5! Thank you for all the support always. It means everything! ❤️
I spent this past weekend at the 100th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neuropathologists as part of the Presidential Symposium. This was my first time in the Lake Tahoe area and it was fantastic! Thank you, Dr Folkerth, for inviting me to speak on #DEI.

My trauma didn’t make me stronger, it shattered me to pieces. *I* made me stronger by piecing myself back together as best as I could and choosing to learn more kindness, understanding, and empathy instead of more bitterness and anger.
I’m thrilled to announce that I have taken on the role of Technical Director of the Histology Research Laboratory (HRL) at the University of Iowa! Even more exciting, we are hiring for a lead histotechnician who will work closely with me as we restructure and grow the lab.
If you’re interested in a mid-volume core lab that allows you to use a wide variety of histology skills, have opportunities to do outreach and education, and want mentorship from me, then this may be the job for you! uiowa.referrals.selectminds.…
Everyone is commenting on my tweet saying “why would you want to do unpaid labor??”. THIS. I was one of those students who had to publish to graduate. Everyone I know is.
When it takes 6 months to get reviews & you can’t graduate without a pub, you’re being unfairly punished.
Academic hot take: requiring PhD students to publish a dissertation manuscript in a journal before they can graduate is pointless, cruel, and stressful for everyone involved. Please everyone stop doing this.
