Part of the issue with the article (if there is one) is the target is off. You're looking for a genre to define the 2020's when the thing that is defining the 20's is the collapse of genre itself. For the first time in history an entire gen has grown up with near total access to every musical tradition and subculture niche scenes simultaneously. Scenes that used to be region or social group specific now show up next to one another in the algorithmic feed. This has resulted in a generation of artists and producers who treat genres less as identities and more as raw materials. Couple this with the democratization of production knowledge via youtube tutorial's and the proliferation of sample pack generation as a gig economy for working up and coming producers and you have a perfect storm of accessible tools, easy access, lower learning curve, and zero label gatekeepers since you can distribute your music yourself.
