What if multiplication fact practice could unlock more than answers? In classrooms that use structured oracy and reflection, students do far more than recall times tables. They explain their thinking, compare strategies, challenge assumptions, and build real number sense. The result is confidence, fluency, and genuine understanding. This short video shows how students use oracy to talk through their reasoning and how reflection helps them connect ideas, strengthen patterns, and grow their independence. If you work in maths education, or you are curious about approaches that go beyond chanting and memorisation, this is worth a watch.

Fluency Without Thinking Isn't Fluency: If a child instantly shouts out "42!" to 6×7 but has no idea why or how to use it to solve 6×70, do they actually possess mathematical fluency? IMO True fluency runs through thinking, not around it. When children can reason ("I know 6×6=36, so 6×7 is just one more 6"), they build permanent cognitive hooks. Timbles balances rapid recall with conceptual reasoning paths. timbles.com/blog/times-table…

Fluency shouldn't stop at knowing what the product is. It’s time to flip the question. We’ve launched Factor Hunt - a new classroom practice extension that provides the product and asks students to find the missing factors. This minor shift deepens their understanding of inverse operations and acts as the perfect bridge to division and fractions. Ready to try it with your class? The recent analysis of 250 million multiplication answers reveals a stark truth: the real problem with times tables isn’t just 9×6. It's that we’ve been teaching tables through rigid sequences of sums for decades (3×4=12, 4×4=16...). When children only practice in order, they rely on a serial search of sums. Timbles fixes this by breaking the sequences to build true multiplicative reasoning. Read our full teardown of the data at timbles.com/blog/the-real-pr…

WRT multiplication facts. I think automaticity is good - and better than rote memory. But mathematical fluency is better. So you know that 6x8 and 8x6 are mathematically the same and not just parts of different sequences in a set of similar looking sums! And other such aspects. E.g That if you want 15x7 you can add the results of 10x7 and 5x7. But (IMO) if your knowledge of 5x7 consists of their place in a list that stops at 10 or 12, then you’re probably stuck. And need the calculator… wonder what we can do about that?! 😉

Timbles: NOT for the MTC - look elsewhere for thought restricting, automated online speed tests that are suitable only for up to age 9 timbles.com/blog/timbles-for…

Fluency is not just accuracy and speed. In our opinion. Maybe in others' opinions as well. It's not just about remembering, but being able to use what you remember.

This!
'What we noticed this week' : A feature added to Timbles last year whereby: 1) users practice multiplying, dividing, factors, associated facts, whatever... on Timbles. 2) when a session finishes, they say what they noticed. In full sentences. Using stems to help. 3) they get immedate feedback and reward for doing so - more than for the speed! 4) the teacher gets at a click of a button, a summary of some of the last 7 days reflections of that class, suggested discussion points for the class and potential activities. Times tables can be SO much more than question-answer-time-score . Multiplication IS so much more than this. AI can help and is used judiciously throughout. Read the blogs. If you want to try it, sign up for the free trial, you will need to sign up as a school to see the extra features as descrobed above. Suitable for any age - not suitable for the MTC as it's unconstrained by the requirements of an online test, it might just make your users think too much!
