Trump fires Lisa Cook in an unprecedented move, and immediately the US dollar sinks against the Yen (in red), the Euro (teal), and the British Pound (purple). Stocks are also sorting it out, but down around a quarter point. Point is: Markets don't think this is move helps American business.

I'm now in the possibly-unique position of having (a) publicly opposed Lisa Cook's appointment to the Fed board and (b) publicly opposed Lisa Cook's removal from the Feb board, absent an actual finding of guilt.

Just received this statement from Lisa Cook, via her attorney: "President Trump purported to fire me 'for cause' when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so.  I will not resign. I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022."
President Trump said he is firing Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve governor, "effective immediately." It's his most direct assault yet on Fed independence -- and a step that it is far from clear he can legally take.

Dear followers, after witnessing the deterioration of Twitter/X, I have just created an account on Bluesky. My handle there is @DAcemogluMIT.bsky.social I might try to post a few things on both platforms for a while, but I'm hoping to slowly transition to Bluesky over time.

Lots more moving to where the sky is blue. Aaron maintains a useful "economics institutions starter kit," which is quite the chore as more arrive daily. Thanks! Someone posted this morning "my feed is like EconTwitter back when it worked." True, that.

?? See Shapiro-Varian-Farrell revision. As to the Bresnahan-Shapiro textbook, at a key juncture Carl said (accurately) "Tim, you want to have written this book."
Can we start a letter-writing campaign to convince Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian to write a new edition of Information Rules? It's incredibly prescient about the evolving digital economy (in 1999!), but a new version could cover so many great examples from the past 25 years.
