Are we more vulnerable to
#misinformation using unverified chat bots?
Yes, says
@nytimes Publisher A.G. Sulzberger, who delivered a prepared speech at the WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers World News Media Congress Monday, warning that the rise of
#AI chatbots is not just a financial threat to news organizations, but to the public’s ability to find and trust accurate information.
While tech companies have served as a helpful vehicle for media and news organizations to gain traffic via search engines and social platforms over the last couple of decades, these companies are beginning to take over the
#journalism itself through A.I. chatbots. By mining the public record for information and serving it directly to users – often without context, verification or attribution – A.I. reporting is made more convenient than accessing the original source. As tech companies continue to overshadow the work of human journalists, it becomes increasingly difficult for news organizations to fund original reporting. This trending reliance on A.I. for news not only threatens the reach and revenue of traditional news organizations, but amplifies the spread of misinformation, conspiracy theories and mistrust among the public.
'The effect isn’t just that people believe untrue things,' Sulzberger says. 'It is that they no longer believe true things.' 👉
