When people were trading fanfic in person they were getting direct engagement, enthusiasm, support.
Meanwhile, fanfic writers aren’t making fic as an academic assignment. They don’t need “advice” from you. Whether on writing, or to substitute their interpretations for yours.
This is why I don’t take some ppl seriously when they talk about “low engagement.” There was once a time fanfics were only traded IN PERSON and ppl had a ball.
Now writers are trying to compete with every viral fic on the platform—while refusing to heed writing advice, mind you.

Writers don’t create to reader specifications.
You don’t get to order off-menu, request substitutions, go behind the counter and change up the ingredients.
You’re not getting a product you paid for. You’re being invited to a free meal.
Be a gracious guest, or see yourself out.

The problem isn’t just “lack of engagement made them sad boo hoo.”
It’s that the tone around fanfiction has changed, and you just inadvertently demonstrated how.

I’ve been writing longfic for ages. I’ve had several popular ones, dating back to 2013. Same writer. Similar quality (I won’t claim they’re all bangers).
Comments, kudos, bookmarks declined over time… but fell off a CLIFF in 2022.
If you want longfic, actually engage with it.

This isn’t me holding my WIPs hostage, fyi. I just pace myself. I’ll keep going either way obviously.
But in my experience it is deeply demotivating to put fic out into a void, and you remember negative or ambivalent commentary a lot longer/more clearly than positive ones.

I walk away. I work on something else. I peck at the fic at times between short stories that I do to remind myself that I CAN write.
I get a few of those done, then return to the long fic and reread it with fresh eyes. Find what I loved about it.
And pick it back up.
This is dumb and vulnerable and I may regret asking and delete, but here goes anyway: fic writers, how do you deal with the heartbreak of having a project you were very excited about absolutely flopping? I had a bunch more planned & written. I can’t bring myself to open the doc

I’m an Old Lesbian and it’s Pride so I’m going to talk briefly about an issue in our community.
The fish don’t notice water.
People grew up in a world with a level of baseline acceptance as your environment.
We only even got that far in 2015.
And now it’s taken for granted.

And the hate crimes against us? They’re just as recent.
It was 1998 when Matthew Shepard was beaten to death and left tied to a fence.
The Pulse was 2016. 49 people died. 53 were injured.
Club Q was only in 2022. Five people died. 19 were injured.

These are important things to know. The AIDS crisis and Stonewall and the UpStairs Lounge fire were not the END of a fight.
That fight is still going.
