Unusual weather in C-U in January, according to the @watersurvey. First 13 days of the month were above normal. Next 9 were well below normal. Last 9 were well above normal again. The result? Monthly mean temperature was 25.7 degrees, matching the long-term normal.

2023 in Champaign-Urbana unofficially tied for 4th place as warmest year on record (since 1888) with a mean temperature of 54.9 degrees. Winter months were far above normal: January 9.2 degrees, February 7 degrees, December 10.5 degrees.

Champaign-Urbana ended 2023 with 5.4 inches of snow all year, 17.8 inches below normal. It was the second-least total in local weather history, more only than the 3.3 inches in 2006.

Confidence is increasing that the middle of November will feature above average temperatures across a large portion of the nation. Some of the highest chances of above normal temps & potentially the largest warm anomalies are forecast to be centered around the Great Lakes.

Happy 100th birthday, University of Illinois Memorial Stadium. The first game to be played at the unfinished stadium was a 7-0 win over the University of Chicago, the lone touchdown by Red Grange. Illinois won the mythical national championship that year.

Looks like Champaign-Urbana's first frost of the season will be Monday morning, with a forecast low of 30 degrees. The last frost was on April 24 (27 degrees) which makes for a 188-day growing season, just about average.
