Sri Lanka’s Free Media Movement (FMM) has condemned the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over its reported request to X (formerly Twitter) concerning a journalist’s post on the country’s energy crisis. In a statement issued today, the FMM said journalist Sulochana Ramiah Mohan had received an email from X (formerly Twitter) informing her that the platform had received a legal request from the CID regarding content shared from her account @sulorammohan. According to the notice, the CID claimed a post linking to one of her articles violated the laws of Sri Lanka. The post reportedly shared an article headlined “Govt seeks time to address power ministry issue,” which focused on concerns surrounding the energy crisis. X said no action had been taken on the content at this stage. The FMM said it reviewed both the article and the subsequent X post and found no illegal content. The media rights body said the reason for the CID request to remove the post or block the account remains unclear. Condemning the move, the FMM described it as a serious interference with freedom of expression and said it would raise the matter with both local and international stakeholders. (Newswire)
