The seasonal anomalousness, as well sheer spatial extent, of upcoming record-shattering Western U.S. heatwave is genuinely startling. This will be associated with, by far, the strongest ridge ever observed during (at least) any Nov-Mar month. #CAwx #AZwx #NMwx #NVwx #UTwx #COwx

The Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascades in California just saw their fastest snowpack melt from late Feb to early March in recorded history. Tahoe City Cross station lost 63 inches of snow depth in 13 days. Fallen Leaf Lake (South Lake Tahoe) went from 119% of normal snowpack on Feb 20 to 0% today. The entire snowpack there is gone.
The melt-off of California's snowpack in the middle of winter has been nothing short of incredible in the last 2 weeks. Many areas that saw 4–7 feet of snow two weeks ago have barren ground today.

NHC has completed its post-analysis and Tropical Cyclone Report for Hurricane #Melissa. Melissa, one of the strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin, reached category 5 intensity (on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) with a minimum central pressure of 892 mb and brought catastrophic wind and storm surge impacts to portions of western Jamaica. Melissa’s slow motion also produced heavy rainfall and catastrophic flood impacts across portions of the Greater Antilles. As of the release of the report, Melissa is responsible for 95 fatalities. The report is available at nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/AL1320… All reports for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season can be found at nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.…

A powerful storm system ushers in flooding rains and storms to the West Coast, and heavy mountain snow from the Sierra Nevada and Cascades to the Rockies. Another system will follow behind it from the west, keeping winter weather over this region through mid-week.
