Here’s the thing: knowing that aurora are produced by the solar wind being channelled by the Earth’s magnetic field and crashing into the atmosphere doesn’t make the phenomenon any less beautiful. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Sometimes when you're just sitting in the snow, leaning against a fence, magic happens. Filmed in real-time, this is how she moves. 💚

A cheese sandwich is the most basic of lunches, but really does anything beat fresh bread and fancy cheese? Like vanilla flavour, it's a world away from being dull once you stop to think about how wonderful it is. Find beauty in the everyday. (And pay for good food if you can)

NEW: we need to talk about UK graduate wages, and the idea that Britain sends too many people to university. American readers should stick around for the UK/US comparisons 👀 Let’s start with this: the UK graduate wage premium has fallen substantially over the last 25 years

We often think of the longest rivers, but what about the largest river networks by the length of all connected rivers? These graphics were fun to put together using @networkx_team, graphframes, @databricks, @matplotlib, and of course some lovely OS data.
This data visualisation shows the largest river networks, as measured by the total length of all the rivers and streams that connect to each other. Using OS data, we're able to determine how rivers, estuaries and streams are connected to each other. 🌊 #UKRivers

I think swifts are some of the most astonishing birds and I could talk for hours about them. Their population is now less than half of what it was when I was born. Biodiversity collapse is accelerating and is even scarier than climate change. theguardian.com/environment/…
I'm playing in a concert this evening, what a novelty! Just four days short of being two years since my last concert. As a trombonist though, I'm hanging around in the foyer for three quarters of the performance.

If we extend our gaze even further east, *11 countries* have set new records for Covid deaths in the last few weeks. It genuinely stops you in your tracks. Think back to December 2020, and a dozen countries are now going through that or worse, a year after vaccines came on line.

I had my last post-work walk in daylight of the year today. Please can we stop changing the clocks? Or if we have to change them, can we change them the other way?
