Many thanks to Wes Streeting for speaking at our reception in @UKParliament today. It was good to hear #KidneyDisease is a priority for the government and the 10 Year Health Plan will lead to improved outcomes for #KidneyPatients. We look forward to working with you to ensure the rhetoric becomes reality. @wesstreeting

I was one of the many people with something in my eye 😢. What an incredible young man Charlie is - he delivered his speech like a pro 👏
What an emotional speech from young Charlie, describing his experience of #KidneyDisease, the hours he has spent on dialysis and how a transplant has given him back his childhood. A lot of people in the room with something in their eye. @Formerlytigger

What my grandparents story taught me is that what we should remember on this Holocaust Memorial Day is not just the horrors of Auschwitz - the planned , mechanised & industrialised attempt to wipe out an entire people but also what led up to it.  That was, quite simply, the willingness of ordinary people to ignore, go along with or, worst still, applaud the idea that all their problems were due to another group of people who deserved to lose their dignity, their freedom and, ultimately, their lives simply for being other.

Research results show the importance of a personalised approach to vaccination for kidney transplant patients. The MELODY study is the largest study to date in people with rare diseases and solid organ transplants with 28,411 participants, including 6,591 who had received a kidney transplant. It investigated whether people on immunosuppressants developed antibodies against the virus that causes Covid-19, following a minimum of three vaccinations. Patients provided a droplet of blood from a self-administered thumb or finger prick in order to detect long-lasting antibody protection. These results highlight how important it is for at risk patients to keep up to date with vaccinations to build up antibodies resulting is less hospitalisation and reduced pressure on the NHS. I recently met with Kidney Research UK to discuss the urgent need for earlier detection of kidney disease. With 7.2M people in the UK affected, a simple urine or blood test could save lives. Early detection is vital—let’s raise awareness. Learn more: kidneyresearchuk.org

Kidney disease often doesn’t appear on its own; it is commonly linked with other conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and mental health conditions. Studying other health conditions alongside kidney disease is crucial to understand how these conditions influence each other, leading to more effective treatments and improved management of overall health. Odd that CKD isn’t discussed in a talk about MLTC and Health Inequalities. Clearly even more awareness to be raised than we thought…
