The denial of bail to 79 opposition activists by the Harare magistrate court, violates both domestic and international human rights standards. Section 50(1)(d) of the Zimbabwean Constitution guarantees the right to bail. International standards, like Article 9(3) of the ICCPR, also upholds and protects this right.
This denial of bail is a clear indication of weaponisation of the judiciary to silence dissenting voices. Mnangagwa regime must respect constitutional and international obligations, uphold the rule of law, and ensure fair justice.
