Here's a neat bit of tree risk management in Wellington Botanic Gardens. Heritage oak with a severe lean and stem defects, crown reduced and a prop inserted, but just there to catch it if it fails, the prop is not actually touching the tree. And, it's all adjustable. Good effort!
