The summer heat is upon us.
Are your kids playing youth sports?
Are you prepared for heat exhaustion and heat stroke?
Here is what I (strongly) suggest:
1. Get 2 Canopies per field. One for each team. $79 at Walmart

2. Get 1 - 2 Coolers per field. $25.77 at Wamart.

3. Most teams ask a parent to bring snacks. Ask one parent to buy 2 - 3 bags of ice for EACH GAME at Walmart. $2.50 per bag. Place the bags in the Cooler.
4. Every parent MUST be responsible for making sure their athlete comes to the game/practice hydrated AND has plenty of WATER!
5. Be a good OBSERVER!
Watch for:
Confusion or just look “out of it”
Collapse, staggering or sluggish feeling
Disorientation
Decreasing performance or weakness
Profuse Sweating or No sweating – either are no good!
Dizzy
Behavior change
Rapid Pulse
Faster breathing or struggling to breathe
6. Pull the athlete from the game/practice and get the athlete under the canopy.
7. Place the bags of ice over the chest, groin, back of neck (Would an ice bath using a Kiddie Pool be best? Of course it would. But getting organizations to bring these is next to impossible. And many do not have a source of water at the youth fields).
8. Call 9-1-1. Remember, COOL FIRST, TRANSPORT SECOND.
9. Monitor and STAY WITH the athlete. Within 10 minutes athlete should "come around." No longer be disoriented, pulse is slowing down, breathing returning to normal.
10. Get a pulse oximeter to make it easy to check the athlete's pulse. $20
