In a world where artificial intelligence can replicate a person’s voice or face in seconds, Denmark is stepping forward with a groundbreaking proposal: a copyright law that grants every citizen ownership of their own likeness. If passed, this law would mean no one — not even AI companies — could legally use your face, voice, or body data without consent. The move comes amid growing global concerns about deepfakes, where digital replicas of real people are used in scams, misinformation, and even political manipulation.

📚 What we’re reading at AJL this month: “The New Age of Sexism: How AI and Emerging Technologies Are Reinventing Misogyny” by Laura Bates. The founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, Bates takes a deep dive into how new technologies are reinforcing sexist tropes and propagating gender-based violence on the internet. From deepfakes and cyber brothels to AI girlfriends and pleasure robots, there’s plenty of material in this book to sink your teeth into, whether you’re new to the topic or have been avidly reading about AI harms against women. Head to our AJL bookshop to get your copy and read along with us this month! ➡️ bookshop.org/shop/ajlunited

🚨 In case you missed it: Amazon’s Ring is rolling out a feature that will scan the face of everyone who comes to your door – without their consent. The feature, called “Familiar Faces” will be available for new Ring doorbells and security cameras starting in December. But privacy advocates are already sounding the alarm. In this article by the @washingtonpost's @ShiraOvide, experts call out serious privacy concerns with this technology, saying, “anyone within sight will have their faces scanned to determine who’s a friend or a stranger.” But it’s not all bad news. The facial recognition feature won’t be available in Illinois, Texas and Portland, Oregon, because of local laws requiring consent when collecting biometric data. This is why strong privacy protections matter. And it shows the importance of regional regulations! 🔒 Let us know what you think of this new feature in the replies. 👇 🔗: washingtonpost.com/technolog…

#birds Swifts fly thousands of miles to breed in the UK—only to find their nest sites blocked up. Their ancient forests with nest hollows now gone, they relied on cavities in buildings, but these, too, have disappeared. To stop their steep 2/3rds decline since 1995, an inexpensive swift brick nest box was proposed to be incorporated by law into new buildings—also helping other red-listed cavity nesting bird species. But in a vote last night, UK Labour destroyed a golden opportunity to do this small thing for one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe.

Appaling levels of barbarity and cruelty- the women and girls of #Sudan and their communities are left to confront this apocalyptic reality. We cannot allow this to become the new normal for women and girls worldwide and for how wars are conducted.
🇸🇩 Sudan: Bara Hospital Horror — The UAE-backed RSF took control of the hospital and massacred countless children while raping pregnant women. Among the victims were women who had given birth barely 15–20 minutes earlier, and others who were in labour and expected to deliver within minutes. None were spared — every one of them was killed after the rape. They weren’t even given the chance to bring life into this world. To me, this stands as the darkest crime ever committed by the RSF.

Except for the bit recommending ‘care’ homes, nope, family is best ♥️
IF I GET DEMENTIA….. I’d like my family to hang this wish list up on the wall where I live. I want them to remember these things. 1a. Every time you enter the room announce yourself. “Hi Dad - it’s Amanda.” NEVER ask- Do you know who I am??? That causes anxiety. • If I get dementia, I want my friends and family to embrace my reality. • If I think my spouse is still alive, or if I think we’re visiting my parents for dinner, let me believe those things. I’ll be much happier for it. • If I get dementia, don’t argue with me about what is true for me versus what is true for you. • If I get dementia, and I am not sure who you are, do not take it personally. My timeline is confusing to me. • If I get dementia, and can no longer use utensils, do not start feeding me. Instead, switch me to a finger-food diet, and see if I can still feed myself. • If I get dementia, and I am sad or anxious, hold my hand and listen. Do not tell me that my feelings are unfounded. • If I get dementia, I don’t want to be treated like a child. Talk to me like the adult that I am. • If I get dementia, I still want to enjoy the things that I’ve always enjoyed. Help me find a way to exercise, read, and visit with friends. • If I get dementia, ask me to tell you a story from my past. • If I get dementia, and I become agitated, take the time to figure out what is bothering me. • If I get dementia, treat me the way that you would want to be treated. • If I get dementia, make sure that there are plenty of snacks for me in the house. Even now if I don’t eat I get angry, and if I have dementia, I may have trouble explaining what I need. • If I get dementia, don’t talk about me as if I’m not in the room. • If I get dementia, don’t feel guilty if you cannot care for me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s not your fault, and you’ve done your best. Find someone who can help you, or choose a great new place for me to live. With a bus and activities!! • If I get dementia, and I live in a dementia care community, please visit me often. • If I get dementia, don’t act frustrated if I mix up names, events, or places. Take a deep breath. It’s not my fault. • If I get dementia, make sure I always have my favorite music playing within earshot. • If I get dementia, and I like to pick up items and carry them around, help me return those items to their original place. • If I get dementia, don’t exclude me from parties and family gatherings. • If I get dementia, know that I still like receiving hugs or handshakes. • If I get dementia, remember that I am still the person you know and love.” ᴄᴏᴘʏ ᴀɴᴅ ᴘᴀsᴛᴇ in Honor of someone you know or knew who has dementia. In Honor of all those I know and love and lost who are fighting Dementia/Alzheimer’s.
