India A were penalised 10 runs during their Tri-Nation A Series match against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Monday after batter Vipraj Nigam was twice found guilty of running on the protected area of the pitch. The penalties were imposed in the 35th and 37th overs of India A’s innings after Nigam received a second warning for running down the middle of the pitch. Under the laws of cricket, any subsequent offence after an initial warning results in a five-run penalty to the batting side. The first warning in the innings had earlier been issued to Anukul Roy. Although Roy was later dismissed, the warning remained in effect for the remainder of India A’s innings. As a result, Sri Lanka A began their chase with 10 runs already added to their score before a ball had been bowled. India A recovered from 143 for 7 to post 265, thanks to a 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket between Vipraj Nigam (51) and Suryansh Shedge (71). According to the Laws of Cricket, batters must avoid running on the protected area of the pitch to prevent damage to the surface, with repeated breaches resulting in five-run penalties. (Newswire)

A historic cultural milestone was achieved in Colombo today as more than 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers came together to set a Guinness World Record for the largest Bharatanatyam dance lesson. The event, held at Galle Face Green, was organised by Sangamam Global Academy of India and Samgamizh Liya of Sri Lanka, bringing together thousands of dancers from Sri Lanka, India and several other countries in a celebration of classical dance and cultural heritage. Participants, dressed in traditional attire, performed synchronised Bharatanatyam movements under the guidance of instructors as part of the official record attempt. Following the performance and adjudication process, the Guinness World Records certificate was formally awarded. Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha received the Guinness World Records certificate on behalf of the performers and organisers. Addressing the gathering, he congratulated the dancers and organisers on the achievement and highlighted the role of culture in strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Sri Lanka. The event was attended by Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar and Deputy Ministers Sundaralingam Pradeep and Mahinda Jayasinghe, while a large crowd gathered to witness the record-breaking performance. Organisers said the initiative aimed to showcase the timeless tradition of Bharatanatyam while promoting cultural exchange and unity across borders. (Newswire)

Voyager 1 and the Epic Journey Through the Oort Cloud Even though Voyager 1 has already entered interstellar space, it’s still deep inside our Solar System in the grandest sense. It will take roughly 300 years for humanity’s farthest spacecraft to reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud — the vast, spherical shell of icy comets and frozen debris that marks the true outer boundary of our Solar System.Once there, crossing the entire Oort Cloud will take another ~30,000 years. That means Voyager 1 will spend tens of thousands of years silently drifting through this enormous region — a cosmic wilderness stretching up to 100,000 AU (nearly 2 light-years) from the Sun, filled with trillions of icy bodies.By the time it finally emerges on the other side, it will have been traveling for over 30,000 years since leaving the planets behind… and it will still be only barely beginning its true journey into the wider Milky Way.A humbling reminder of just how vast our Solar System really is — and how small we are in the grand timeline of space exploration. Voyager’s voyage is only getting started.

Officials of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) informed the Committee on Public Finance (CoPF) that government fuel subsidies are expected to end this month. Responding to questions from CoPF Chairman Dr. Harsha de Silva, CPC officials said no decision has yet been made on a fuel price increase. De Silva also questioned how the CPC is managing foreign exchange buying amid the recent volatility in the market, adding that there was speculation that the volatility was caused by the CPC. The disclosures come after President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in May revealed that the government was exploring measures, including fuel pricing adjustments, as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption. The President said rising global fuel prices had pushed the local cost of a litre of diesel to Rs. 720. He noted that the CPC continues to operate at a loss, with the government subsidising about Rs. 100 per litre of diesel to maintain the retail price at Rs. 392. (Newswire)
