I have a theory for one reason WVU football has underperformed in the Big 12: having a bitter conference rival or rivals makes you try just a little harder in every aspect. Without a rivalry, it’s just enough fall off to significantly handicap a program.

I am 100% convinced that the Big East prior to WVU leaving was every bit as tough a conference as the current Big 12. Three or four Big East teams were ranked in the top 25 much of the time. WVU stayed in the top 25. But we had two rivals we absolutely could not allow to win.

I was a preteen during Major Harrison led undefeated season. I was in college during Marc Bulger. My 20s for Pat White and Geno. My generation is the most “wtf just happened?” of em all.
Kids today can’t comprehend this era of West Virginia football.

Factor WVU’s 31 appearances with 11 Sweet 16s (top 25 all-time), three Elite Eights, two Final Fours, 1942 natty claim, 13 conference titles and legendary figures and West Virginia objectively has a case as a top 25 all-time program. This makes recent seasons feel worse for fans.
